A model for predicting the decay of vitamins in space

20.09.2019

A team of nutrition scientists at the University of Massachusetts Amherst has developed a groundbreaking, user-friendly mathematical model for NASA that should ensure that astronauts' food stays nutrient-rich during long space missions.

The new study gives NASA a time-saving opportunity to predict the degradation of spaceflight vitamins over time and to more accurately and efficiently plan resupply. The study was funded by a $982 NASA grant.

"There was no information in the literature to directly answer the questions and concerns that NASA had. We used real-time data in our study to train a mathematical model and determine how predictive and robust the model would be," said study author Khan Xiao, professor and scientist at Clydesdale Scholar of Food Science.

Xiao and colleagues have shown for the first time how thiamine (vitamin B1) degrades within two years on three team menu options: brown rice, pea soup and beef brisket. Xiao says it was "pretty good" to find that brown rice and pea soup stored at 20°C showed resistance to thiamine degradation. However, the thiamine in beef brisket was far less stable, retaining only 3 percent of the vitamin after two years.

The researchers note that NASA emphasizes the importance of obtaining nutrients naturally from food. "It's preferable for better health," Xiao says. "More and more studies show that your body takes vitamin pills differently from real foods like pea soup."

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Lightyear 0 - solar-powered production car 16.06.2022

Solar-powered startup Lightyear has unveiled the final production-ready design for its first car, the Lightyear 0, formerly known as the Lightyear One. After six years of development, Lightyear 0 is available for order ahead of first deliveries this fall.

The company has already involved up to 500 people in the work and has concluded deals with more than a hundred suppliers - the machine is already ready for production. Unlike competitors, the novelty in some conditions is able to work without external charging for months.

Lightyear 0 is a family sedan with built-in solar panels with a total area of 5 m2, capable of producing electricity for a day, allowing you to drive up to 70 km. The four-door sedan has a range of 560 km on the highway at a speed of 110 km / h, even in conditions when there is no sunlight.

During WLTP testing, the Lightyear 0 managed 625 km, 4% more than the all-wheel drive Tesla Model 3 Long Range. At the same time, the Lightyear model has 60 kWh traction batteries, and the same Tesla has 82 kWh. The low drag coefficient (0,19) is the most aerodynamic family car ever built, according to Lightyear. Bridgestone's specially designed tires play a role.

It is known that the novelty accelerates to 100 km / h in 10 seconds, the maximum speed is 160 km / h. Although it is inferior to the Tesla Model 3 in this, it charges much faster. At the same time, although even on a cloudless day, solar cells will not allow to fully charge the battery, their contribution is quite large - during the summer day, the car can receive enough solar energy to drive up to 70 km. According to the company, if a driver drives no more than 50 km each day, he is able to drive for months before he finally needs a charging station.

Solar cells are capable of adding a range of up to 10 km per hour, charging from the home power grid - 32 km per hour, when using a charging station with the ability to quickly charge - up to 520 km per hour.

The interior of the five-seater is made from plant-based artificial leather, recycled PET bottles and palm wood. At the same time, for a recycled car, the model will cost indecently expensive - it is unlikely that such prices will help to compensate for savings on electricity. A total of 946 electric vehicles will be produced, deliveries will begin in November this year. Each will cost customers $266. If successful, the company promises to introduce a version with a more affordable price of $32, which is expected to begin production in 2025.
