Snow for Antarctica

29.07.2019

In an attempt to save the planet from global warming, scientists are developing ever more extreme strategies. Following Harvard scientists who proposed reducing the Earth's heating with sulfate aerosols, glaciologists at the University of Tasmania decided to save Antarctica's glaciers with 74 trillion tons of artificial snow.

Recent studies have shown that the warm waters of the ocean are washing away the coastal glaciers of West Antarctica, accelerating their destruction and sliding into the water. If all this ice collapses, the water level around the world will rise by about 3 meters - for coastal cities it will be a disaster.

To prevent this, scientists propose to strengthen the glaciers with artificial snow. Modeling results show that glacier destruction can be stopped by adding 10 meters of new ice every year for 10 years. To form this amount of ice in total, 74 trillion tons of artificial snow created from desalinated ocean water would be required.

True, it will not be easy to implement such a plan in practice. For comparison, the most high-performance artificial snow machines now make 20 tons of snow per minute. To produce 74 trillion, they would have to work for 700 years. Even if they manage to build new more powerful machines, they will need an enormous amount of energy, moreover, "green". Just to pump water out of the ocean, you need to build 000 wind turbines.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

S1000 unmanned droid 07.01.2014

The original drone from DJI Innovations is presented at CES 2014. The design of the unmanned aerial vehicle includes modern cameras Canon 5D Mark II or Mark III. Such robots, which have small devices for photo and video recording, are no longer a super-original solution today, however, drones that could carry a fairly heavy digital SLR camera are still new to the industry.

The Chinese company DJI Innovations has prepared for CES an 8-rotor drone model S1000, which was designed specifically to move in the air with a Canon 5D Mark II / Mark III SLR camera. These professional SLR cameras can take part in the filming of feature films and documentaries.

The idea of using drones for commercial purposes is embracing a growing number of firms. Amazon has already announced its intention to use drones to deliver purchases in the future. Representatives of DJI are well aware of how great the competition in the market of robotic devices is today. Companies like Parrot have already been able to sell a huge number of their aircraft equipped with built-in cameras, so the developers from China decided to raise the bar and create something that would have no analogues among competing companies today.

DJI Innovations hopes that film and news makers will take a keen interest in their "drone monster", which rightfully deserves its name due to its massive size. Installed professional equipment on it, which the S1000 is able to lift - is the bet made by the developers.

At the moment, it is not entirely clear what the cost of the drone will be. One can only draw an analogy with the younger 6-rotor model S800, the price of which is $6000. There is no exact data on the release date of the device, however, company representatives indicated that it should take place in the first quarter of 2014.

DJI is confident in its success, calling its offspring the choice of journalists and filmmakers. The Chinese company also said that news outlets like the Associated Press and the BBC are now training their journalists on how to operate drones like the S1000.
