Playing with other children affects language learning

Researchers at the University of Waterloo looked at the language processing skills of young children who spend the majority of their time with adults compared to those who were more surrounded by children. Scientists sought to understand how well children understand the speech of other children.

Despite the fact that all the kids processed children's speech well, it was better to associate a new word with a new object in children who communicated a lot with other children.

Children's language is very different from that of adults. Even a child of six or seven years of age pronounces words a little differently than adults. "We wanted to know if more exposure to hearing other children's speech would affect a child's speech ability," said Katherine White, professor of psychology at Waterloo, who co-authored the study with Ph.D. Dana Bernier.

As part of the study, scientists conducted two experiments with 88 babies (and their parents). Children in one group spent up to eight hours a week interacting with other children. In the other group, the number of hours exceeded eight.

The first experiment compared the processing of speech uttered by an adult or a seven-year-old child. In the second experiment, a speaking child was asked to deliberately mispronounce the names of objects, thus testing the sensitivity of speech processing.

Research has shown that toddlers are very good at understanding the speech of young children, and this is true even for toddlers who don't have much experience with other children. This means that they can use this type of speech, in addition to adult speech, to learn their native language. A difference was also found in how babies from the two groups process new words.
