Created the world's strongest electromagnet

19.06.2019

Scientists at the University of Florida's National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (MagLab) have set a new record for the strongest permanent magnetic field generated by a new electromagnet with superconducting coils. In the same laboratory is the previous holder of this record, an electromagnet that generates a field with a force of 45 Tesla, and a new electromagnet produces a field with a force of 45.5 Tesla. It doesn't sound like a huge breakthrough, but it does pave the way for even more powerful magnets based on the use of superconductivity.

Note that scientists have long been creating strong magnetic fields using inductors called solenoids. When an electric current passes through the windings of a coil, it creates a magnetic field. An increase in the strength of the current flowing through the windings leads to an increase in the generated magnetic field.

The 45 Tesla electromagnet was the strongest DC electromagnet for nearly two decades. This device was the key device around which all MagLab activities were concentrated, but in this laboratory there is also another magnet with windings "having electrical resistance", roughly speaking, a copper coil that produces a magnetic field with a force of 33.6 Tesla. The windings of this magnet carry a power of 31 MW, and in order to remove the generated heat from them, it is necessary to pump thousands of liters of pre-chilled water.

Created in the MagLab laboratory, the new electromagnet is called "Little Big Coil 3", its assembled size does not exceed the size of a beer glass. Its superconducting windings are not made from the traditional tin-niobium alloy, but instead use a new REBCO (rare-earth-barium-copper-oxide) material that becomes superconductive at a higher temperature. The thickness of the tape of this material does not exceed the thickness of a human hair, which makes it possible to wind it very tightly. The scientists replaced the insulating material with a new material that does not affect the superconductivity of the windings and does not distort the generated magnetic field. This whole set of measures made it possible to increase the current density in the windings and obtain a record strength of the field generated by them.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Paper bottles 21.05.2021

In Finland, startup Pulpex has begun mass-producing paper whiskey bottles. The material for the startup is supplied by the logging company Stora Enso.

The bottles are made from cellulose fiber treated with a special food-grade water-based coating. You can dispose of them after use as ordinary paper waste.

"We don't use a PET barrier. If we use plastic, we want to keep the bottles recyclable. If they end up in nature, they can biodegrade," said Sohrab Kazemahwazi, who is now in the production of ecological bottles.

Stora Enso and Pulpex will work together in 2022 to build a scalable high-speed pulp bottle production line. It also became known about the intention of Pulpex to create a partner consortium for the production of ecological bottles. In addition to Diageo, it will include Pepsi, Unilever, GSK and Castrol. Together they intend to use 750 million paper bottles per year.

The startup Pulpex was launched by the British alcoholic beverage manufacturer Diageo. It produces under the brands Johnnie Walker, Crown Royal, J&B, Smirnoff, Captain Morgan, Baileys, Guinness.
