A serious disadvantage of geothermal energy

13.06.2019

EGS (Enhanced geothermal system) hydraulic stimulation technology, which is similar in many ways to hydraulic fracturing technology used in oil and gas production, increases the risk of "artificial earthquakes". This conclusion was reached by a group of seismologists from the Korean Geological Society.

Scientists analyzed the circumstances of the 5,5 magnitude earthquake that occurred on November 15, 2017 in Pohang, Republic of Korea. As a result of this event, 135 people suffered and about 1700 lost their homes. It turned out that the earthquake was triggered by the operation of a geothermal station.

Prior to the Pohang event, it was believed that the power of induced earthquakes could be kept under control by maintaining the volume, pressure and rate of injection of fluid into cracks in the earth's crust at a certain level, as well as by controlling the condition of the rocks at the exit points of fluid from injection wells.

After conducting surveys, it turned out that this so-called "volume hypothesis" does not work, and the main risk factor for induced earthquakes is not the injection volume, but the tectonic state of the faults located in the project area.

It is necessary to control not so much the power of individual seismic events as their location. The more hypocenters (the central point where the rock movement begins, the core of the earthquake source) of induced earthquakes lie in the zone of a particular fault, the higher the probability that a large displacement will occur along the plane of this fault.

The findings of the study can be extended to other areas of activity - hydrocarbon production associated with hydraulic fracturing; re-injection of associated waters generated during oil and gas production; projects for pumping sewage and liquid production waste into the bowels.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Tesla will create its own drone 29.09.2013

The American electric car manufacturer Tesla Motors is going to release a car that can move without a driver in the next three years. As the head of the company, Elon Musk, clarified, creating a fully self-propelled car is extremely difficult, and it will take much more time. We are talking about the fact that the robot will control the Tesla car for 90% of the way. "It's very difficult to automate the last few percent of the driving process," the executive explained.

Musk also noted that the development of the autopilot will be carried out in-house using only its own technologies. Tesla has already started recruiting specialists with experience in building automatic systems.

It is worth noting that Tesla lags behind other manufacturers in terms of the use of robotic assistants for drivers. For example, the flagship Model S electric car lacks adaptive cruise control, which is considered a basic feature for self-driving vehicles.

The three-year timeframe within which Tesla wants to enter the autonomous driving market is very ambitious. Other automakers, including Japanese Nissan and German Daimler AG, plan to develop a robotic car only by 2020.

The updated Mercedes S-Class has already implemented a number of functions for unmanned driving. In particular, the executive sedan can drive itself in a traffic jam, maintaining a distance from other road users, and also monitor the lane at speeds of more than 190 km / h. BMW also has a similar system. The Swedish concern Volvo has previously demonstrated its ideas on the way to the creation of self-propelled vehicles.

In the spring of 2013, auto parts manufacturer Continental tested a semi-automatic driving system on public roads. A Volkswagen Passat equipped with such a system has traveled over 16 km. According to representatives of Continental, they used a ready-made solution, which is cheaper than analogues created from scratch.

One of the main problems in the market for self-driving cars is the high cost of autopilots. Working on workarounds, for example, in the Israeli company Mobileye Vision Technologies: its system will cost several hundred dollars.
