New helmets of the Swiss Guards are printed on 3D printers

The Vatican's Swiss Guard, a colorfully dressed mini-army meant to protect the Pope, has received new 3D-printed helmets. The plastic helmets were handed over to the corps on the 513th anniversary of the founding of this branch of the armed forces - the oldest surviving to this day.

Externally, the new helmets are almost identical to the previous version, but they show the coat of arms of Pope Julius II, who settled on Swiss soldiers when creating a unit for his personal protection.

One of the main advantages of the new helmets is that they will not get as hot in the sun as the old ones made of metal. In addition, metal helmets made in Austria weighed 2 kg each, while new ones made in Switzerland weigh 570 g.

The helmet is part of the ceremonial uniform, with its recognizable variegated combination of red, yellow and blue stripes, worn during official papal services and visits by heads of state. At other times, the guards, who number about 110, wear a simpler blue uniform with a beret.
