MESO instead of CMOS

12.12.2018

Scientists from Intel, the University of California at Berkeley and the National Laboratory. Lawrence at Berkeley proposed a magnetoelectric spin-orbit (MESO) logic device.

Since the early 1980s, most electronics has relied on the use of CMOS (complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor) or CMOS (complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor) technology. Its merits are well known, but the potential is running out as technology standards shrink, inevitably raising the question of moving to another technology that can further reduce power consumption, increase productivity and increase integration.

Unlike CMOS devices, whose operation is related to electron flows, the principle of operation of MESO devices is based on the effect of spin-orbit transduction, which reflects the relationship between the angular momentum of an electron and its linear momentum, and magnetoelectric switching. The device uses a new quantum material.

MESO is said to have the potential to reduce voltage by a factor of 5 and switching energy by a factor of 10 to 30 compared to current CMOS logic circuits. According to another estimate, logic and memory chips using MESO technology will outperform modern counterparts made using CMOS technology by 10-100 times in energy efficiency and 5 times in terms of integration.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

IBM Watson Discovery Advisor service 08.09.2014

IBM has unveiled a new addition to the cognitive capabilities of the Watson supercomputer that allows researchers to accelerate the pace of scientific research by finding previously unexplored connections when analyzing big data.

The new IBM Watson Discovery Advisor service is available in the cloud and is designed to help scientists work on their research. The service reduces the time required to confirm hypotheses and formulate conclusions from months to days and from days to hours, opening up new opportunities for researchers and developers.

Based on the ability of the Watson supercomputer to understand natural languages, Watson Discovery Advisor similarly understands the language of science, such as how chemical elements interact, and provides professionals with a full-featured research tool in the life sciences and other fields.

Leading research organizations, including Baylor College of Medicine, Johnson & Johnson, and the Genome Research Center in New York, are already using Watson Discovery Advisor to accelerate the development of scientific projects.

New technologies can be used in all areas where the analysis of a large amount of information is required. Cognitive computing will allow experts to work with huge amounts of data, including the products of the intellectual work of many experts. Watson can be used:

- to help developers of medicines needed to save the lives of many people;
- expanding the analytical capabilities of financial consultants;
- improving the strategy of M&A lawyers through a comprehensive legal assessment and analysis of documents;
- for the work of government analysts in areas related to security;
- to create new recipes. Chefs can use Watson to create new dishes, learn cooking principles and ingredients, and access a huge recipe database of food compatibility, chemistry and cuisines from around the world.

IBM Watson Discovery Advisor can transform data-driven industries and professions such as law, biotechnology, education, chemistry, metal fabrication, scientific research, engineering, and forensics.
