Potato plastic

25.10.2018

Pontus Turnqvist, a student from Sweden, demonstrated the possibility of creating plastic from starch and water during one of the world's most prestigious design competitions.

The event at which the guy presented his development is called The James Dyson Award. It is here that inventors come who are able to offer the world new solutions in various fields. Pontus Turnquist presented to the jury a work designed to reduce the amount of natural plastic products that pollute the environment. He showed a material called Potato Plastic, which is completely non-toxic and safe.

The student at Lund University was inspired to create plastic from water and starch by a desire to help animals, who often suffer from plastic debris in their bodies. After all, as you know, almost eight million tons of real plastic gets into the waters of the world's oceans every year. In most cases, it is the result of activities in the field of catering.

Therefore, Pontus suggested making disposable tableware from natural ingredients, the decay time of which does not exceed two months. In addition, "potato" devices after a specified time return to their initial state and again take the form of water and starch. Right during the presentation of the project, Turnquist showed the mechanism for creating dishes, which won the sympathy of the judges. Now he will compete for leadership among the top twenty developers.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Seat belt that unfastens in the water 22.12.2012

The Dutch company Fijen TMLS has developed a car seat belt that makes it easier to rescue from a sinking car. If the car falls into the water, the latch of such a belt is automatically unfastened, and a person can freely leave the car.

In the United States alone, about 400 motorists are killed every year as a result of falling cars into the water. In most cases, people in a panic do not have time to unfasten their seat belts, and the device, designed to save lives in the event of a collision, turns into a death trap. For young children, modern seat belts under water are a real death sentence, although belts are clearly necessary for protection from collision-related accidents.

Dutch engineers solved this problem with a seat belt that automatically unbuckles when immersed in water. Now drivers and passengers do not have to spend precious seconds trying to unfasten their belt. The new belt looks no different from the usual ones and does not contain complex electronic devices, so its price does not exceed $40.

Inside the latch of the new belt is a special cartridge with a salt tablet, which loses strength very quickly when wet. Thus, after the belt is immersed in water, the latch is automatically activated, and the belt pops out of the lock in one second. The driver and passengers can only open the door to get out of the sinking car. If you equip child seats with such a mechanism, then in the event of a car flooding, it is enough to “pull” the child out of the car seat and swim to the surface of the water. The salt tablet is in a special removable cartridge that needs to be changed once every few years - apparently in order to prevent the loss of strength of the salt tablet and spontaneous unfastening of the belt.

The invention of the Dutch can be widely used not only in the automotive industry, but also in many other areas of activity where there is a high risk of dying due to an accidental fall into the water. For example, it is for such cases that body armor and backpacks for the military are equipped with quick-release mounts, but often a wounded or stunned soldier, a sailor does not have time to use them and drowns.
