Large body of water discovered under the surface of Mars

30.07.2018

Scientists now have no doubt that water once existed on Mars. There is a lot of evidence for this, starting elementarily from visually observed riverbeds and ending with data from rovers.

However, recent data indicate that there may still be quite a lot of water on the Red Planet. It's just hidden under the surface. Using the MARSIS radar aboard the Mars Express spacecraft, scientists found an area in the Planum Australe region where the radar signals were very different from those in other areas.

Scientists say that the signals indicate the presence of a reservoir about 20 km wide under the surface of the planet. It is located at a depth of about 1,5 km. The depth of the reservoir, unfortunately, cannot be measured due to the insufficient power of the equipment, but it is definitely "not less than a meter". That is, it can be both an aquifer and a whole lake with a depth of tens or more meters.

Naturally, given the existence of such a region, scientists suggest that water under the surface of Mars may be in other areas.

A few years ago, scientists discovered facts indicating that a huge amount of water can be hidden under the surface of the Earth. Moreover, the volume of the ancient underground ocean can exceed the volume of the World Ocean. True, this ocean lies at a depth of about 400-600 km.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Controlling technology with the power of thought 04.04.2022

Chinese scientists have developed a technology for controlling robotic equipment by recognizing brain activity. Control accuracy is impressive and accessible even without special training. In practice, the new technology will be implemented in a future Chinese orbital station, allowing the taikonauts, for example, to control a huge robotic arm with the power of one thought.

We are talking about simulation, not about the control of real mechanisms. However, there is only one step from simulation to real technology, and it will soon be taken.

During the experiment, 35 volunteers had to mentally control a segmented robotic arm. Of this number, 11 participants immediately coped with the task. It is important to note that 27 test subjects had no experience in operating such devices at all, but after a little training, they were also able to control the mechanism with the highest accuracy.

The average accuracy of operations has reached an unprecedented 99,07%. In all previous experiments of this kind, the accuracy of command execution ranged from 40% to 80%. People without experience showed less accuracy, but also at the highest level - 98,9%.

Chinese researchers were able to achieve such a high result thanks to a well-thought-out system for enhancing brain activity in the right direction. So, controlled segments of the manipulator flickered on the screen with different, but with fixed frequencies. It is claimed that this helped to synchronize brain activity with each segment of the robotic arm and identify the activation signal in all the chaos of thoughts.

"In future space exploration, humans and machines will work together," the state-run Xinhua news agency reported. "Man will no longer need to use a keyboard, mouse, or even a joystick, but will be able to use his brain and eyes."
