Nerve freezing may help fight obesity

Freezing the vagus nerve helps reduce appetite and helps in the fight against excess weight with moderate and moderate obesity, a group of American scientists found.

Researchers from the Emory University School of Medicine, the State University of New York at Buffalo, and the Pennsylvania State University Medical Center conducted a study of ten patients with grade XNUMX and XNUMX obesity.

Each of them underwent a procedure to freeze the posterior trunk of the vagus nerve, through which hunger signals enter the brain. A needle was inserted into the back of the patients and a certain part of the nerve was frozen using cryogenic argon. After that, for 90 days, scientists observed the condition of people.

According to the results of the study, all participants in the experiment noted a decrease in appetite. Patients' weight decreased by 3,6% and overweight body mass index (BMI) fell by 14%. No complications or side effects were observed after freezing of the vagus nerve. The researchers note that the procedure is safe and produces real results.

"The medical literature shows that the vast majority of weight loss programs fail, especially when people try to reduce food intake. When our stomachs are empty, the body senses this and switches to survival mode in search of food," says lead author David Prologo.

According to the scientist, this study is aimed at reducing the strength of the signal that an empty stomach transmits to the brain.

"We developed this treatment for obese patients of the first and second degree in order to reduce the wasting effect of weight loss," explains Prologo.

Earth's magnetic field has a clear cycle 21.08.2021

Scientists from the University of Liverpool studied the history of the Earth's magnetic field and came to the conclusion that its strength periodically decreases and then increases again. The cycles are 200 million years long.

Experts conducted a paleomagnetic analysis of rocks from ancient lava flows in East Scotland. The age of the samples ranged from 200 to 500 million years.

The results showed that 332-416 million years ago, the strength of the geomagnetic field was less than 25% of what it is today. A similar decline also occurred 120 million years ago.
