Solar farm in the open ocean

16.02.2018

Land is very expensive in the Netherlands and it would be incredibly expensive to build a really big solar farm. More expensive than in the rest of the world.

The Netherlands plans to set up a solar farm in the ocean in the next three years. The project will start with a trial run of a 30 square meter solar farm 10 km off the coast of The Hague. The farm will be located between two existing windmills and connected by the same cables, meaning no additional infrastructure will be needed.

If everything goes smoothly - that is, if the panels hold up and the electricity is cheap enough - the farm will expand to its full size of 2500 square meters. The planners hope to reach these targets by 2021.

Offshore solar farms are not only cheap in terms of land. They also receive more sunlight, and the surrounding water acts as a natural coolant, increasing the overall efficiency of the installation. If the Netherlands succeeds, it will be the first solar farm to be installed on the high seas.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Methanol production at room temperature 28.09.2023

Scientists from Cardiff University and an international research team have presented an innovative method for producing methanol, a key component for the production of fuels, plastics and medicines, which does not require external energy sources such as light or electricity and operates at normal room temperature. This method is based on the use of a highly active catalyst that converts natural gas methane and oxygen into methanol.

Innovation involves eliminating costly and energy-intensive processes and creating new catalytic methods to make methanol production more environmentally friendly. A special role in this process is played by phosphomolybdate with a reduced H2 content, which stimulates the aerobic oxidation of methane to methanol at room temperature.

Professor Graham Hutchings, a chemistry expert at Cardiff University and one of the study's co-authors, said: "The discovery of efficient catalysts for the synthesis of methanol from methane is of key importance for the modern chemical industry."

This research was made possible through international collaborations including the Max Planck Center for the Foundations of Heterogeneous Catalysis, the Net Zero Innovation Institute at Cardiff University and overseas research institutes. The Cardiff University team, working in cutting-edge laboratories, shared their expertise in catalyst design and performance analysis techniques, which was fundamental to understanding catalyst performance and increasing its lifespan.

Dr Andrea Folli, electrocatalysis scientist at the Net Zero Innovation Institute, added: "This discovery could be an important step towards sustainable fuel economy for methanol-based fuels, which is especially important given the huge supply of methane as a feedstock."
