AMDVLK - open source Vulkan drivers for Linux

26.12.2017

AMD has released AMDVLK drivers for Linux. These are the first open source graphics drivers for AMD Radeon 3D cards to provide full support for the Vulkan 1.0 graphics API.

The drivers are based on the AMD Platform Abstraction Library (PAL) component, which encapsulates the specific hardware and OS features used by different AMD drivers. This allows you to provide the same experience across platforms, including support for new GPUs and development tools.

Compatible solutions include Radeon HD 3 series, Radeon HD 7000M series, Radeon™ R8000/R5/R7 9/200, Radeon RX 300/400, Radeon M500/M200/M300, Radeon RX Vega, AMD FirePro Workstation Wx400/Wx000 /Wx100, Radeon Pro WX x300 and Radeon Pro 100/400.

The drivers are compliant with the Vulkan 1.0 specification, supporting 30 Vulkan extensions, tracing for Radeon GPU Profiler, built-in debugging and profiling tools, intermediate command pre-buffer, and SR-IOV virtualization. As far as compatible operating systems are concerned, the list includes 64-bit versions of Ubuntu 16.04.3 and RedHat 7.4. The drivers are available in the AMD GPUOpen GitHub repository.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

A substance has been discovered that accelerates wound healing 21.03.2022

Dutch biologists have isolated a substance from human saliva that significantly accelerates wound healing, which can help in the creation of drugs for those suffering from chronic ulcers, in the treatment of burns.

"We hope that our discovery will ultimately benefit people suffering from incurable wounds such as foot or diabetic ulcers, as well as cuts and burns," said study lead author Menno Oudhoff.

To study the effect of human saliva on wound healing, scientists cultured human epithelial cells from the inside of the cheek in cups. They then inflicted an artificial wound on the resulting cell film. After that, one cell culture was placed in an isotonic solution without foreign impurities, and the other - in human saliva. After 16 hours, the researchers found that the “wound” had completely healed in the saliva cup, while it remained open in the solution cup. From this it followed that saliva contains a substance that accelerates the healing of wounds.

Since saliva is a complex liquid containing many components, it was necessary to find out which substance heals wounds. Scientists divided saliva into components, tested them and found out that the protein histatin is responsible for wound healing.

This study explains not only why animals lick their wounds, but also why wounds in the mouth, for example, after tooth extraction, heal faster than those on the skin. It also shows us the way to create new drugs.
