Phone at a pedestrian crossing - illegal

25.10.2017

While some countries have not yet learned how to deal with drivers talking on a mobile phone while driving, others will soon begin to fine pedestrians for the same.

Of course, no one is going to prohibit the use of a mobile device while walking. Instead, the city of Honolulu, Hawaii, has already passed a law that prohibits the use of electronic devices while crossing highways.

To be precise, "viewing" is prohibited, that is, you can still talk on the phone, but you can no longer cross the road, staring at the display. The fine for such a violation will be $35. The law will come into force tomorrow.

In some European cities, special ground traffic lights have already appeared for those who cannot take their eyes off the screen for a few seconds. But the fear of getting fined may be a more effective incentive. It can be assumed that such initiatives will become more widespread in the coming years.

Pedestrian fatalities in the United States rose by 9% last year to almost 6000, the highest since 1990, according to statistics.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Biometric terminals-readers Safran Sigma 11.02.2017

Safran announced the release of powerful Sigma biometric reader terminals with an oversized optical fingerprint scanner and a high-precision digital recognition algorithm. As CNews was told in the company, the novelties are equipped with a 5-inch touchscreen display with a virtual keyboard and interactive functionality, as well as a camera, microphone and speaker, thanks to which biometric identification based on MorphoAccess Sigma can be supplemented with video telephony.

The terminals have high identification accuracy, built-in memory for 3-10 thousand records, IP65 dust/moisture protection and are compatible with Prox, iClass, MIFARE, MIFARE Plus, DESFire card readers for personnel identification using an access card.

The high speed of fingerprint recognition, which is less than 1 second, allows the use of new biometric terminals at objects with a large human flow, for example, for access control in large office centers, enterprises, etc. What's more, biometric identification powered by MorphoAccess Sigma is enhanced by Safran's latest papillary pattern recognition algorithms to detect false data from scars or dirt on fingerprints. To obtain a high-quality fingerprint template and simplify its identification, new devices use the MSO300 scanner with an increased optical sensor area.

An additional advantage of MorphoAccess Sigma is their support for video telephony using the built-in camera, microphone, speaker and display. Based on the Safran biometric terminal, video and audio communication is carried out using the IP protocol, which ensures high speed and quality of transmitted data. At the request of the security service, biometric identification can be accompanied by one of two options for the operation of the video phone: calling or monitoring. For example, the calling function is useful for exchanging urgent messages, such as a request to open a door remotely, and watching is useful for visually identifying a person passing through an access point.

Protection against dust and moisture according to IP65 class and performance in a wide temperature range (from -20°C to 60°C) allow you to install a new biometric terminal in unheated rooms. Since biometric identification is accompanied by control of door locks or turnstiles, MorphoAccess Sigma is equipped with 2 universal inputs (including door control), 2 universal outputs and a door relay. For compatibility with third-party ACS equipment, Sigma have a Wiegand interface (configurable up to 512 bits). The device's built-in 5" color touchscreen display provides access to a user interface that can be customized to fit your company's needs and set your own content: corporate video, audio messages, wallpapers, and more.

The retail price for MorphoAccess Sigma reader terminals for biometric fingerprint identification is from 1160 euros.
