The American company Soltac has released a solar inflatable furnace, which is a balloon made of aluminized polyester film, which, when inflated, takes the form of a solar parabolic collector.

A pot with a volume of 1,5 liters, placed in focus, boils in about 1,5 hours on a sunny day. A black pot with a Teflon coating inside is attached to the stove, in which the whole structure is packed when carried.

A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. Proteus - a material that cannot be cut 25.07.2020

Researchers from the University of Durham in the UK and the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany have announced the creation of the world's first material that cannot be cut. At the same time, the density of the material is only 15% of the density of steel, which, according to scientists, makes it promising in the manufacture of locks or light armor.

The material, dubbed "Proteus," uses ceramic spheres in a honeycomb aluminum structure to prevent angle grinders, drills, and the like from impacting them. When trying to cut through the material, destructive vibrations occur that dull any cutting tools. According to the researchers, when developing the material, they drew inspiration from the tough cellular peel of a grapefruit and durable, shatter-resistant shells of molluscs, which are composed of aragonite.

An angle grinder or drill with a drill can only work on the top layer of the Proteus plate, but as soon as they reach the embedded ceramic spheres, the vibrations generated dull the sharp edges of the tools, and then small particles of ceramic dust begin to fill the gaps in the matrix-like structure of the metal.

Due to the interatomic forces between the ceramic grains, the strength and energy of the disk or drill is returned to them, and they are weakened under their own attack.

The new material is equally effective against high pressure waterjet torches, as the spherical shape of the ceramic inserts expands the water jet, significantly slowing down the cutting speed.

In addition to bike locks and light armor, the proteus has potential in protective gear for people using cutting tools. The patent is currently pending and the research team is looking for manufacturing partners to bring the material to market.
