A research team at the University of California, Berkeley examined the possible link between emotional acceptance and psychological health by testing more than 1 adults. The results showed that people who typically denied dark emotions or judged them very harshly felt more psychologically stressed. Conversely, those who generally "allowed" feelings such as sadness, disappointment, and resentment reported fewer symptoms of mood disorders.

In different groups, three studies were conducted - both in the laboratory and on the Internet. This took into account factors such as age, gender, socio-economic status of the subjects. According to scientists, they took into account the latter, since living in abundance can also contribute to self-acceptance.

In the first study, more than 1 subjects filled out surveys where they answered how much they agreed with, for example, the following statement: "I tell myself that I should not feel the way I feel now." Those who did not experience negative feelings about their poor condition generally felt better.

Further, in laboratory conditions, more than 150 participants assessed their emotions about life's difficulties. The same correlation was found here.

In the final study, more than 200 people reported the most difficult situations over a two-week period. When they were asked again about their mental health six months later, those who avoided negative emotions showed more symptoms of mood disorders.
