96-layer 3D TLC NAND memory

Toshiba Memory Corporation announced the creation of a prototype 96-layer BiCS FLASH flash memory chip with a three-dimensional layout. Each cell of this memory stores three bits of information. Evaluation samples of 96-layer 3D TLC NAND flash memory chips with a density of 256 Gb should appear in the second half of the year, and the manufacturer expects to start serial production in 2018.

The new memory is suitable for consumer and enterprise SSDs, smartphones, tablets and memory cards.

The manufacturer plans to release 96-layer microcircuits with a density of 512 Gbit and the introduction of QLC technology, which allows storing four bits in each cell.

Compared to 64-layer BiCS FLASH memory, the specific storage density is increased by 40%. This allows more memory to be made from a single wafer and lower cost per bit.

The release of 96-layer BiCS FLASH memory is planned to be mastered at the Fab 5 factory, the Fab 2 factory opened about a year ago, and at the Fab 6 factory, which should start operating next summer.

Euclid telescope launched 05.07.2023

The Euclid spacecraft of the European Space Agency was successfully launched into orbit by a SpaceX Falcon 9 launch vehicle. The primary goal of the mission is to investigate the causes of the accelerated expansion of the universe, a phenomenon known as "dark matter" and a mystery to scientists.

Euclid's high-tech telescope is expected to produce a detailed map of the cosmos covering about a third of the celestial sphere in order to map the location of millions of galaxies and measure the average distance between them - this is one of the factors associated with the influence of dark energy.

The Euclid sighting system will observe galaxies as they were 3 billion years ago (currently the universe is about 13 billion years old), as light takes time to reach Earth from distant objects.

In addition, the spacecraft will study dark energy and mark on the map the presence of a mysterious cosmic phenomenon - dark matter. Dark matter is present in the Universe five times more than ordinary matter. Although dark matter does not absorb or reflect light, scientists will be able to detect it due to the gravitational effect on "ordinary" matter such as stars and galaxies.

Within a month, the spacecraft will cover a distance of 1,5 million kilometers, then come to the Lagrange point L2, located on the other side of the Sun, where it will meet with the James Webb telescope.
