Archaeologists exploring Wittenberg Castle (East Germany) have found on its territory whole layers of animal bones and shards from broken dishes. In the XNUMXth century, feasts were held in the castle courtyard, feasting ate and drank as much as they liked, and when the goblets were empty, they simply threw them over their shoulders. There are literally thousands of ceramic fragments here - as archaeologist Holger Rode says, "the cups were simply thrown away, like modern paper cups."

According to Rohde, the bowls, fragments of which were found in Wittenberg, were originally made in order to use them once. Only the rich could afford such dishes. They also had other mugs - porcelain, decorated with various ornaments. Of course, they were treated more carefully.

Wittenberg was the castle of the princely house of Askani. The first mention of a settlement on the site of the castle dates back to 1180. In 1260, the residence of the Dukes of Saxony-Wittenberg appeared here, and in 1293 the settlement received the rights of the city. Wittenberg was well located and therefore, over time, becomes an important trading center. When the House of Askani was cut short, Wittenberg came under the control of the Wettin princes. At the end of the 1517th century, it became the residence of Frederick III the Wise, Elector of Saxony. At this time, the castle is being rebuilt. (During the current excavations, which began in November last year, it was possible to discover the remains of the original Askani castle, fragments of walls and tiles from the stove of the Wettin castle.) In 95, it was in Wittenberg, on the door of the Castle Church, that Martin Luther posted his "XNUMX theses against sale of indulgences" and thus initiated the Reformation.
