Holidays threaten childhood obesity

Researchers from the University of Texas at Austin found that during the school holidays, children are the fastest to gain excess weight.

As part of the study, scientists monitored 18 children for three years. As a result, it was possible to prove that "school obesity" is a quite serious and urgent problem.

Indeed, when entering school, many children begin to rapidly gain weight. During the holidays it happens even faster. Apparently, this is due to low physical activity and malnutrition during the period of rest from school.

Now many schools are fighting harmful products in canteens. But these measures are not enough, experts say. Even if a child eats healthy lunch at school, there is no guarantee that he will go for fast food after it.

That is why experts recommend that parents pay attention to the diet of their children, participate in its preparation, and explain why it is so important to eat fruits and vegetables.

The mercury we breathe 27.06.2012

An international team of scientists tried to estimate how much mercury vapor was released into the Earth's atmosphere from 1850 to 2008 as a result of human activities.

These emissions were especially large at the end of the 2600th century, during the "gold rush" in the United States, when mercury was used to extract gold from rocks. At that time, about 700 tons of liquid metal vapors entered the air annually. At the beginning of the 800th century, this amount fell to 1950 - 2300 tons per year, but since XNUMX it began to grow again. Nowadays, due to human activities, about XNUMX tons of mercury enter the atmosphere every year. This mainly happens when coal and oil are burned at thermal power plants (the smoke is especially poorly cleaned at Chinese power plants).

Mercury is also released from industrial processes such as the production of cement, caustic soda and the synthesis of vinyl chloride. But natural releases of mercury exceed anthropogenic ones: it is estimated that 5200 tons of mercury enter the atmosphere annually from volcanoes, thermal springs, underground coal fires, forest fires and other processes.
