A well-chosen diet improves the performance of children

27.09.2016

Scientists from the University of Eastern Finland have found out how the quality of nutrition affects intelligence. It turned out that the Finnish, Baltic and Mediterranean diets have a positive effect on the ability of schoolchildren to perceive information.

For their experiment, the researchers selected 161 volunteers aged 6-8 years. All children were first grade students. For three years of study, scientists monitored the nutrition and academic performance of children. It turned out that schoolchildren who ate Finnish, Baltic and Mediterranean cuisine better absorbed textual information. The peculiarity of these diets is less sugar and a large amount of whole grains, fish, berries, fruits and vegetables.

Scientists note that nutrition is important for schoolchildren, but the status of the family, the presence of weight problems, and physical activity have no lesser role on intelligence.

Scientists have previously reported that heredity plays a key role in student achievement. This factor is associated with 55% of the differences in the activity and grades of children in the classroom. Also, experts noted that success at school still largely depends on the educational institution and the situation in the family.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

High Speed Travel to Mars 26.01.2023

NASA has selected several new space projects for possible implementation in the future. Among them is the project of American scientists, which consists in using a new type of nuclear engine in a space rocket so that it can fly to Mars in 45 days.

NASA now has very far-reaching plans for space exploration, and therefore actively attracts scientists to develop new technological projects that can be implemented in space. Focus has already written about some of them, which concern, for example, the creation of an oxygen pipeline on the Moon and a new aircraft for flights on Titan. At this stage, NASA has selected 14 projects that initially received funding for further development. That is, this is only the first phase of the study, and only a few projects will go to the third phase.

NASA is going to blow up astronauts to the moon in a few years, and then at the end of the decade to begin construction of the first lunar base. The next stage in space exploration will be a landing on Mars, which may already take place in the next decade. Therefore, projects related to the Red Planet are of particular interest to the US space agency.

Among such projects is a new nuclear propulsion concept for a space rocket from Ryan Gosse of Florida State University in the US. In fact, the concept is not entirely new, although it is an innovative technology that may receive further funding. Back in the 20th century, the United States was already engaged in the creation of a nuclear thermal engine and a nuclear electric engine for space rockets. But these projects have not received further development.

Gosse proposed to combine two types of nuclear engine into one, which would consist of two parts, i.e. thermal and electrical. This will allow, according to the scientist, to get to Mars in 45 days. This nuclear engine, as mentioned above, will consist of two components that will complement each other.

For example, a nuclear thermal propulsion consists of a nuclear reactor that heats liquid hydrogen fuel, turns it into ionized hydrogen gas, which then creates thrust. On the other hand, a nuclear electric propulsion consists of a nuclear reactor providing electrical power to a Gall effect propulsion, that is, an ion propulsion generating an electromagnetic field. This field ionizes and accelerates an inert gas such as xenon to create thrust.

Both of these engines have significant advantages over conventional chemical propulsion in space rockets. The new engine, according to Gosse, will combine the advantages of both nuclear rocket engines - thermal and electric.

Such a double structure could provide a fast flight to Mars in 45 days, and so people can quickly fly to other, more distant planets in the solar system.

Today, conventional rocket engines are capable of delivering astronauts to Mars in 9-12 months. Therefore, such a short trip of 45 days will significantly reduce the risks of a manned flight, and will also be safer for the health of astronauts.
