Technology for creating 3D car models from BMW

04.08.2016

BMW has started to use a unique optical measurement technology at its pilot plant in Munich to create 3D models of vehicles in order to identify possible defects.

We are talking about the introduction of a fully automated installation. With the help of special sensors, a freely moving robot arm creates a full-fledged three-dimensional image of the car, and also builds a 3D model based on data collected with an accuracy of up to 100 microns. This allows you to identify barely visible flaws already at the initial stage of production.

The robot arm on special rails is installed on each longitudinal axis of the optical measuring complex and can move freely, drawing a car diagram in space. The process involves determining the base points, after which separate areas of the surface measuring approximately 80 x 80 cm are fixed. These areas are then combined and a picture of a full-fledged car is created. Data analysis quickly identifies any flaws, allowing technical integrators to take appropriate action early in production.

It is noted that the three-dimensional scanning of the vehicle can be fully automated and work during off-peak hours of loading or at night. Measurement data and analysis results are distributed online over the local network of the enterprise, and are also available to factories.

Previously, in manufacturing processes, robots used just one sensor to identify each specific part of the car. The new installation will involve two robotic arms. Thanks to this, measurements take half the time spent, as a result, the rework phase becomes much shorter.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Excalibur Laser Cannon 22.03.2014

Excalibur laser gun successfully tested. It consists of many fiber optic laser modules. It is likely that in the near future it is precisely such laser weapons that will be installed on warships, aircraft and armored vehicles.

High-energy lasers have enormous military potential and can fundamentally change the tactics of warfare. But today, lasers have serious drawbacks: large dimensions and weight, low radiation power with high energy consumption. In addition, fluctuations in the atmosphere, dust, smoke, etc. affect the "killing power" of the laser. In addition, as the distance to the target increases, the size of the laser spot also increases. As a result, it is required to increase the exposure time or the beam power accordingly.

The experimental Excalibur laser includes 4 modules with 7 laser emitters in each. The total capacity of the installation can easily be increased by adding additional modules.

The defense science agency DARPA, in search of solutions to these problems, successfully tested a multi-element emitter laser as part of the Excalibur project. The Excalibur laser includes 28 fiber lasers combined into a common system capable of focusing a laser beam at a distance of more than 7 km. The emitting elements of the laser have a power of 10 W each, and are combined into blocks of 7 pieces. Such blocks with a diameter of 100 mm can be combined, increasing the total power of the laser system.

DARPA experiments have shown that the use of a scalable laser with a set of emitters can be very effective. According to DARPA, Excalibur has demonstrated near-perfect correction of atmospheric turbulence, far exceeding the capabilities of a laser with conventional optics. Excalibur uses a special laser beam optimization algorithm: the parameters of the laser beam are adjusted within a matter of milliseconds, compensating, as a result, for the turbulence of the atmosphere.

Excalibur capacity in the next 3 years is planned to be increased to the minimum required for military use, i.е. up to 100 kW. Such power is enough to destroy shells, missiles, drones, and to defeat enemy manpower. If the tests of the 100-kW Excalibur are considered successful, there will be a laser compatible with all existing platforms: aircraft, helicopters, armored vehicles, ships. The developers believe that the fiber-optic laser will be 10 times more compact and lighter than experienced solid-state laser systems that exist today.
