The problem of narcissism, that is, a person's tendency to narcissism, is seriously interested in modern personnel officers. Psychologists turned to graphology and came up with a simple index of narcissism - the specific, that is, per letter, size of a person's signature. Thanks to computer technology, it is possible to calculate its area in square pixels. The higher the index, the greater the degree of narcissism, of course.

It was with this measure that Zhou Yi approached the study, taking data from auction houses on sales from 1980 to 2012 - more than 416000 works by 815 artists who worked from 1860 to the present fell into her field of vision. Half of them were signed, which made it possible to determine how highly the creator evaluates himself. As it turned out, the more narcissism, the higher the price of paintings at auction.

It is believed that a narcissistic artist quickly annoys the public with his shocking and loses popularity. In fact, everything is not so: the higher the degree of narcissism, the more often the artist's works participate in exhibitions and the more his paintings accumulate in museums. Such artists, in addition, love large forms - the higher the level of narcissism, the larger the average, maximum, and minimum sizes of the paintings.

The fact that a person prone to narcissism seeks to attract the attention of others is quite natural, because in this way he gives the public the opportunity to touch the great. Here's how Picasso said to himself: "God, in fact, is an artist, like me ... Yes, I myself am a god." Apparently, it is this feeling that helps such people easily step over the limits of what is permitted and create works that make people talk about themselves for decades. But whether they will like the bitter truth revealed by Zhou Yi is unclear.
