Silicone film smoothes wrinkles

30.05.2016

For most of us, aging is associated not with mutations, not with chromosomal telomeres, not with wear and tear of mitochondria, but with wrinkles.

Indeed, the skin ages quickly and begins to look unimportant - but the problem here is not only in poor appearance: losing elasticity and strength, the skin ceases to protect us from bacteria, toxins, heat and cold, radioactive radiation; finally, she does not regenerate well when injured. And how good it would be if spoiled, aged, unusable skin could be replaced with an artificial analogue.

Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, led by Daniel Anderson (Daniel Anderson) have created a polymer film that has the elasticity and strength of real skin.

The skin-like film was made from filaments of siloxane, the so-called variety of organic compounds whose molecules are built on the basis of a skeleton of silicon and oxygen atoms. The researchers tested about a hundred siloxane polymers cross-linked via chemical bonds; as a result, we managed to find one that best suited real human skin.

The "synthetic coating" is more stretchable (the siloxane film could be stretched 250 times, after which it returned to its original state, while the skin can only be stretched 180 times), in addition, the authors of the work claim that their material is better suited for wound dressing. than conventional silicone and polyurethane hydrogels.

The process of applying the film to the skin takes place in two stages and is similar to a conventional cosmetic procedure: first, a polysiloxane raw material is applied, and then a catalyst is added, which triggers the formation of additional chemical crosslinks between the siloxane molecules.

The most important thing is that the whole procedure has already been tested on volunteers: the film itself cannot be seen in any way, but at the same time it improves the appearance of the skin itself - for example, with the help of a new product, it was possible to reduce wrinkles and bags under the eyes. In other words, the siloxane film returned to the aged skin the lost firmness and elasticity.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Chamomile train 06.07.2015

The history of steam locomotives has more than two centuries, and in our time it is unlikely that anyone would come up with the idea to engage in steam traction. Unless that person is Ozgur Sahin, assistant professor of biology and physics at Columbia University in New York. He once discovered that the contraction and swelling of bacterial spores with changes in humidity could be used to move other objects. Moreover, considering the size of the spores, the energy they produce exceeds the energy of some materials that are used to move objects in the macrocosm.

With his colleagues in the lab, informally called Extreme Bio or "Extreme Biology", Sahin began to study the question of whether the energy of swelling spores could be used to propel microscopic machines with the power of moist air. It turned out that it is possible if you figure out how to collect disputes into a single work team. To do this, the scientists used a flexible tape on which they fixed the spores. Under the influence of dry air, the spores were reduced, and the tape, accordingly, was compressed. Under the influence of moist air, the tape straightened out like an artificial muscle.

To enhance the effect, the researchers came up with a device where the pieces of tape were arranged in a row inside a plastic container, on top of which were louvres. When water was poured into the container, it evaporated, the air became humid, the ribbon lengthened, and the petals opened. Humid air came out, the pores narrowed, the tape contracted, the blinds closed. The air below them became moist again, and the process repeated, demonstrating the motive power of the blinds.

The scientists called the device an "evaporation piston," attached it to a generator, and caused a miniature light bulb to light up. After that, they developed the idea and created a "humidity mill" that used a plastic wheel covered in a ribbon of spores. One half of the wheel was in a humid atmosphere, and the other half was in dry air. Thus, some of the pores swelled, and some did not, which caused a difference in weight in the wheel. As a result, it began to rotate, creating a constant source of energy. Such an engine is still far from a steam locomotive, although, given the huge number of reservoirs on Earth, one can imagine giant "steam" turbines based on this principle.
