Sleep saves you from infections

Researchers Ark Preyser and Cindy W. Leung of the University of California at San Francisco analyzed the medical records of 23 people with an average age of about 46 years. In the records, among other things, it was possible to find information about how and how much a person sleeps and how often he had a cold, pneumonia and other infectious diseases.

It turned out that those who slept less than five hours were 28% more likely to catch a cold and 80% more likely to get pneumonia, flu and ear infections - compared to those who took 7-8 hours of sleep. The same applies to sleep disorders, when a person seems to sleep for a long time, but does not get enough sleep - those who had such problems caught a cold 30% more often.

Pathogenic bacteria and viruses must be destroyed by the immune system. Obviously, sleep somehow helps the immune system - but how exactly is not yet clear. According to scientists, due to lack of sleep, immune T-lymphocytes begin to work poorly, but more research will be needed to get a detailed picture of the “sleep-immune” relationships. And, of course, I would like to know whether it is possible to use sleep not only to prevent illness, but also to use it as a medicine in case the infection still manages to gain a foothold in the body.

Ford continues to introduce advanced systems designed to improve road safety. The next development was a complex called Wrong Way Alert.

The new system warns of the departure of the lane intended for oncoming traffic. The accidents connected with departure of the car on an oncoming lane, especially often come to an end with serious injuries or death of people. Approximately every fourth road traffic accident (RTA) with a fatal outcome is associated with traffic in the oncoming lane.

Wrong Way Alert relies on road sign recognition technology, which is already used on Ford vehicles: a special camera behind the windshield recognizes important traffic signs along the course and transmits them to the dashboard or head-up display. In addition, the Wrong Way Alert complex takes into account information about the location of the car provided by the on-board navigation system.

If a driver passes between two no-travel signs on a motorway access road, the Wrong Way Alert system will beep and display a no-travel sign on the dashboard, along with a text message prompting you to check the correct direction of travel.

The Wrong Way Alert system debuted on the new generation Ford Focus.
