Trusting on the Internet is easier

03.01.2003

The prevalence of the Internet in a particular country is usually associated with the number of personal computers, the level of education and the level of income of the population.

But the American sociologist Jonathan Leland found a correlation with an unexpected factor: the degree of trust in people. He compared data on the number of households connected to the Internet in 17 countries with the number of positive answers to the question "Do you think people are generally trustworthy?" The question was included in the questionnaire of an international psychological survey conducted several years ago and aimed at identifying the basic life values among different peoples.

It turned out that almost two-thirds of the differences in the prevalence of the Internet are explained by this factor - the degree of trust in people. Among the most "gullible" countries, the authors of the study name Norway, as an example of "distrustful" - Brazil. Even if the influence of other factors, such as the number of computers in a country, is eliminated by statistical processing, the factor of trust remains important for the prevalence of the Internet.

How can such a result be explained? The Internet is a huge medium, the size and anonymity of which can encourage dishonesty and deceit, as we all know at least from the example of "virus writers". Therefore, people are wary, distrustful and do not really want to go there. The degree of gullibility of the population of different countries is the result of cultural and historical characteristics.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Smartphone Oppo N1 29.09.2013

The device received a 5,9-inch IPS screen with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels (373 ppi). This screen supports operation while wearing gloves. The heart is the Snapdragon 600 single-chip platform. The amount of RAM is 2 GB, flash memory - 16 or 32 GB, depending on the modification. The manufacturer did not provide a slot for memory cards.

Oppo equipped the new smartphone with a fairly capacious battery - 3610 mAh. The list of adapters includes Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC. The dimensions of the novelty are 170,7 x 82,6 x 9 mm with a weight of 213 g. For comparison, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, which has a slightly smaller display, weighs only 168 g. At the same time, the Oppo N1 case is also made of plastic (except for the metal framework).

Moving on to more interesting moments, we can not fail to mention the touch panel on the back of the device. The company itself suggested the scenarios for its use a month ago: moving between desktops, scrolling web pages, in addition, rotational movements are responsible for adjusting the volume or “zooming” in the camera application, and double-clicking opens a list of running applications. By the way, the area of the sensory area is 12 sq.cm. The technology is called O-Touch.

The second highlight of the device is the camera. The fact that the company will position this smartphone as a photographic device has been known for a long time. But the fact that the camera of the novelty is located on a special rotating module became known only at the time of the announcement. By the way, BBK, which owns the Oppo brand (more precisely, Oppo is a division of BBK Electronics), apparently adopted this design, since just a few hours ago we already reported on a similar device of the Vivo Xplay 2 smartphone (this brand also belongs to BBK). Actually, the design of the camera module is clearly visible in the images.

For those who are worried about the reliability of the design, the official information from Oppo will be useful. The company claims that the movement is capable of withstanding 100 rotations. The module is able to rotate 000 degrees, which allows you to use the camera as a front camera. The camera itself is equipped with a 206/1 format sensor with a resolution of 3,06 megapixels. The camera lens consists of six lenses. The maximum aperture value is f/13. A special Fujitsu chip, previously named Owl, is responsible for image processing. The camera also received a dual LED flash. It is also known that Oppo is preparing external lenses for this smartphone, but they will not be devices similar to standalone Sony modules, but will be removable lenses.

The list of original features does not end there. The manufacturer has implemented O-Click technology in the device. Its essence lies in a separate camera control panel, which is capable of operating at a distance of up to 50 m. Perhaps this function will not be particularly in demand, especially considering the need to carry a control panel with you.

Regarding the operating system, everything is also not prosaic. First, Oppo is talking about the new Color OS. It is not entirely clear yet whether the shell is meant (similar to TouchWiz and others) or really a heavily reworked modification of Android (similar to MIUI). Secondly, the Oppo N1 is the first smartphone created in collaboration with the updated CyanogenMod firmware team. This team, led by firmware creator Steve Kondik, announced a few days ago that it had received a $7 million investment to develop the project. In a few weeks, this firmware will appear in the Google Play store. Actually, returning to the Oppo smartphone, it should be noted that the official CyanogenMod firmware for this device will appear a little later. At the same time, modifications of smartphones with pre-installed CyanogenMod firmware will go on sale.
