Habitable space station prototype

08.01.2016

The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) received a $2016 billion budget increase from the US Congress for 1,3, reaching $19,3 billion. within the framework of which for $350 million it will be necessary to build a prototype of a new habitable station for deep space.

It is assumed that by 2020 NASA will be able to test the station in outer space between the Earth and the Moon, and by 2030 launch a manned spacecraft from it to Mars.

It is not yet known how the program will be implemented and what the future station will look like. NASA is currently funding various studies aimed at developing the concept of the space station, and among the recipients of grants are Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Orbital ATK, Bigelow Aerospace, which are entrusted with the development of the overall design. In addition, Dynetics, Hamilton Sundstrand and Orbital Technologies Corp. received funds for specific technologies used inside the plant, such as life support systems. However, it can be expected that the first projects will be presented to the public as early as next year, since Congress expects to see a fully finished prototype no later than 2018.

Once the initial development phase is over, NASA will have to make a decision as to who will build the manned station. Companies like Bigelow Aerospace, which will send an inflatable habitable compartment to the ISS next year, are interested in dual-use technologies to exploit the commercial potential of spaceflight. At the same time, Sam Scimemi, director of NASA's division in charge of operating the ISS, said he wants to build a manned station on his own. In general, the project is still between the sky and the moon.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Japan will no longer need drivers in ten years 15.07.2012

The Japanese authorities intend to start implementing a project for the large-scale introduction of automatic driving systems. In the early 2020s, Japanese cars will be driven by autopilots that will be able to drive cars at high speeds without human assistance. Research in this direction will begin at the end of this month.

It is assumed that the automatic system will increase passenger comfort, reduce traffic jams and prevent many traffic accidents. Also, the autopilot will make vehicles more accessible and safer for the elderly, of whom there are a lot in Japan. The automatic system, moreover, will solve the problem of congestion on descents and ascents, which is relevant for Japan (60% of traffic jams), where drivers find it difficult to maintain a uniform speed and often get into accidents.

The Japanese autopilot will operate completely independently - the passenger will only need to select a destination. Some modern motor vehicles already use certain technologies, for example, to maintain a certain speed and distance in traffic. Also last year, wireless traffic and accident data transmission networks were installed throughout Japan.

In general, the infrastructure is ready for the introduction of an autopilot, it remains only to develop equipment for cars and control centers, which, according to Japanese experts, is quite achievable within 10 years. There are, however, a number of obstacles to be overcome. In particular, it is necessary to create a control center whose duties will include traffic control on expressways. Also, for maximum efficiency of automatic machines, it is desirable to build special roads, which are very expensive.
