MAX31856 - ADC for thermocouples with protection and linearization

29.12.2015

The MAX31856 from Maxim Integrated allows you to quickly and easily implement a ready-made measurement path for working with thermocouples (K, J, N, R, S, T, E, and B types) on a single chip, because. contains all the necessary and sufficient functional blocks:

- protection of input lines;
- signal amplification and normalization circuit;
- ADC;
- reference voltage source;
- cold junction compensation;
- built-in linearization.

AFE can measure temperatures in the range of -210...+1800°C depending on the particular type of thermocouple with a resolution of 0,0078125°C. Each type of thermocouple has its own non-linearity, which is compensated by the internal linearization block. The inputs of the microcircuit have built-in protection in the range of +-45 V, as well as hardware for detecting a short circuit and a break in the sensor, and an output - an indicator of a substandard signal "FAULT".

Through the SPI interface, all the required settings are made, the choice of the type of thermocouple and the linearization function. The values are provided in degrees Celsius, which does not require the use of additional functions in the software.

To evaluate the AFE capability of the MAX31856, the MAX31856EVSYS evaluation kit is available, consisting of a MAX31856-based evaluation board, PC interface board, and software. This kit allows you to quickly and conveniently connect the chip to a PC and evaluate the achievable performance without additional development of a prototyping board. The MAX31856-based evaluation board has a PMOD interface, making it possible to connect it to your own board at the prototyping stage.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Phobos will be destroyed by Mars 12.11.2015

Scientists have named the timing of the destruction by Mars of one of its two satellites - Phobos. Planetologists spoke about this during the 47th annual meeting of the Planetary Division of the American Astronomical Society in Maryland.

According to the model proposed by the authors, in about 30-50 million years, the gravitational attraction of Mars will lead to the destruction of Phobos into smaller fragments, some of which will fall to the surface of the planet.

Planetologists came to such conclusions by analyzing the distribution of cracks (grooves) in the vicinity of the Stickney crater. They, as the researchers found out, were formed not due to the collision of Phobos with an asteroid, but as a result of the occurrence of internal stresses in the celestial body.

Scientists associate the appearance of deformations with two main factors. First, Phobos (with a radius of 11,1 kilometers) is located at a distance of six thousand kilometers from the surface of Mars. This makes it the closest satellite to its planet in the solar system.

According to scientists, every hundred years the satellite gets closer to its planet by two meters. Secondly, Phobos has many cavities inside, which make up about a quarter of its total volume, while outside the celestial body is covered with a hundred-meter layer of regolith.

For the first time, cracks on the satellite of Mars were discovered by the Viking station. Similar structures are observed on Triton, a satellite of Neptune. According to scientists, over time, Triton, like Phobos, will break the gravitational pull of its planet.
