A new way to determine distances in space

19.09.2015

Scientists from the University of Cambridge (UK) have come up with a new way to determine the distances to stars based on identical spectral characteristics.

Astronomers have taken as a basis a fairly simple principle: if two stars have exactly the same structure and chemical composition, then the intensity of their glow should also be identical. Accordingly, the difference in the distance to the stars should affect their brightness.

During the study, high-resolution spectra of 600 stars were analyzed, as a result of which 175 pairs of "twins" were found, and in each pair the distance to one of the celestial bodies was known with high accuracy.

To compare the spectra, the British chose 400 main spectral bands out of the available 280 and found that the proposed method gives an error of no more than eight percent compared to measurements based on the annual stellar parallax.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

MSP430FR6047 - microcontroller for ultrasonic meters 09.02.2018

The MSP430FR6047 is a new representative of microcontrollers from Texas Instruments, designed primarily for use in water, heat and gas meters.

The indisputable advantage of the MSP430FR6047 is that it uses innovative FRAM memory instead of traditional FLASH, as a result, reliability is increased (the number of rewrite cycles is up to 1015), power consumption is reduced during write operations, and it becomes possible to expand the amount of RAM due to FRAM.

The built-in USS (Ultrasonic Sensing Solution) module provides high measurement accuracy over a wide range of liquid flow rates (it is possible to measure very low flow rates: up to 1 l/h), helps to achieve ultra-low energy consumption during measurement and contributes to cheaper devices due to the requirement for small number of external components.

The MSP430FR6047 incorporates a high-speed (8 MSPS) sigma-delta ADC module, which, together with LEA (Low-Energy Accelerator), allows you to create current-optimized, high-precision measurement solutions with long battery life. In addition, the microcontroller includes a segment display driver, RTC, 12-bit SAR ADC, analog comparator, encryption and checksum modules. There is a built-in BSL bootloader that allows you to program and update software via UART and I2C interfaces even without using a JTAG programmer.

Main parameters of MSP430FR6047:

Clock frequency 16 MHz;
Program memory (FRAM) up to 256 kB;
RAM (SRAM) 8 kB;
Interfaces: 2xI2C, 6xSPI, 4xUART;
Built-in segment display controller;
32-bit hardware multiplier;
6-channel DMA controller;
Real time clock;
Sigma-delta ADC 12-bit 8 MSPS (16 channels), programmable gain;
SAR ADC 12-bit (16 channels);
Analog comparator (16 channels);
Timer 16-bit (x6);
