Gadget for the treatment of seasickness with electrotherapy

16.09.2015

Researchers at Imperial College London have developed a method to prevent seasickness through electrical stimulation. They expect to create a portable device with electrodes connected to the head and put it into mass production.

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) has long been successfully used to relieve acute and chronic pain of various origins, including headache. Electrical impulses from electrodes located on the skin above the pain focus stimulate the nerves to block pain signals in the direction of the brain, and the pain is not perceived.

The authors proposed to stimulate the left parietal lobe of the brain with electrical discharges in order to influence the vestibular apparatus of a person and thus eliminate the occurrence of nausea associated with seasickness.

The method was tested by 20 volunteers, including 10 men and 10 women. Electrodes were fixed on their heads for about 10 minutes to influence the current. The subjects were then seated in a motorized chair that rotated and tilted, simulating the conditions under which seasickness occurs in humans while traveling in ships and cars. The scientists recorded how long it took before the participants reported that they were feeling unwell, and then that the nausea had subsided. After the volunteers recovered from the first test session, the second session was carried out in the same way.

The authors noted that the current parameters and duration of exposure selected by them are safe for human health. According to the results of the experience, patients who underwent electrotherapy were less prone to seasickness and recovered from it faster than those who did not receive such treatment.

The researchers expect that in five to XNUMX years the technology will find its way into over-the-counter devices like those already available that use TENS to relieve chronic pain as well as pregnancy pain. Perhaps they will represent a cap with electrodes that can connect to a smartphone and use its processor and battery.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Toshiba TMPM372 microcontroller with vector computing unit 21.04.2013

Toshiba has announced the release of the TMPM372 microcontroller with an integrated vector computing unit. An important feature of this product is a small number of outputs and a wide output pitch, which leads to a reduction in the installation costs of the product. The serial production of new items on the ARM Cortex-M3 core, which replenished the TX03 series, the manufacturer promises to start in May this year.

The new model resembles the TMPM372FWUG model, but features an increased pin pitch from 0,5 to 0,8 mm, which, according to the manufacturer, makes wave soldering and the use of single-layer printed circuit boards possible.

The microcontroller is designed to operate at frequencies up to 80 MHz. It is equipped with 128 KB flash and 6 KB SRAM, four SIO/UART channels, one PMD channel, an eight-channel sixteen-bit timer, eleven channels of a twelve-bit ADC, and a watchdog timer. In addition, there is an internal clock generator and other blocks. The microcircuit, designed for a supply voltage of 4,5-5,5 V, is available in an LQFP64 package with dimensions of 14 x 14 mm.

Applications for the new controller include home appliances and embedded systems, including vending machine and ATM electronics. The planned output is one million pieces per month.
