FOCL data transmitted over a record distance

13.07.2015

Scientists from the University of California at San Diego, with the assistance of researchers from Qualcomm, have come up with a solution to one of the main problems of fiber optic networks - signal distortion over long distances.

In modern networks, one fiber optic cable can accommodate from 30 to 200 data transmission channels using different frequencies. As the distance increases, signals in different channels begin to overlap each other, resulting in data loss. In order to avoid this, telecommunications operators install complex and expensive repeaters over certain distances.

Researchers have found a way to get rid of repeaters and thereby reduce the cost of building fiber optic networks. They themselves speak of their achievement as overcoming the "biggest limits" of fiber optic networks.

Layering of signals in a fiber optic cable occurs according to known laws. The essence of the researchers' invention is to pre-configure the signals in such a way that subsequent distortions are leveled.

The system created by scientists is based on the principle of a frequency comb. As soon as the frequency of one of the signals changes, it synchronizes the frequencies of the other signals. Thus, they are constantly at a certain distance from each other in the frequency spectrum.
In addition, the system allows you to decrypt the data at the receiving end, even if they were superimposed on each other.

"Today's fiber optic systems are like quicksand. The more you resist in the quicksand, the more you sink into it," said research leader Nikola Alic. "In fiber, after a certain point, the more power you add to the signal, the more distortion you get. This makes it difficult to transmit a signal over a long distance."

In their experiment, the researchers used a fiber optic cable with five channels. They were able to achieve distortion-free data transmission over a record distance of 12 thousand kilometers without the use of repeaters. The scientists believe their method can be scaled to more channels.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Synthesized natural pain reliever 06.02.2016

Morphine as a drug that has an analgesic effect has been known for a long time. Despite its powerful analgesic properties, the use of morphine is limited because it causes respiratory depression and addiction. The latter circumstance forced scientists at Tulane University in New Orleans (USA) to look for an alternative drug that does not cause addiction, and they found it in the form of endomorphine.

Endomorphins are two endogenous opioid peptides that are formed in the human body and play an important role in the formation of motivations, emotions, reactions to stress and pain, and in the control of food intake. Synthesized endomorphine acts on the same opioid receptor as morphine. Therefore, to study the safety and effectiveness, the researchers conducted a series of experiments on rats, which were given both of these substances in equally strong doses. In rats that were injected with morphine, motor skills and breathing were significantly impaired, while endomorphine did not cause such an effect. In addition, the analgesic effects of endomorphine were similar or stronger than those of morphine.

As for dependence, experiments showed that rats spent more time in the compartment where they were injected with morphine and made more efforts to get the next portion of the substance than rats that were given endomorphine. Tests like these reflect the potential for addiction in people.

In addition, endomorphine did not contribute to the activation of glial cells in the spinal cord in the experiments. This effect is usually inherent in morphine and contributes to the development of addiction and abuse of substances. The researchers expect to begin clinical trials within the next two years.
