VL6180X - distance, light and gesture sensor

09.05.2015

STMicroelectronics has released a new combined distance and light sensor VL6180X, based on proprietary FlightSense photon time-of-flight technology. The VL6180X can measure distances up to 40 cm and light levels up to 100000 lux. The VL6180X can recognize simple gestures.

Measurement of the distance to the obstacle is carried out using a built-in source of infrared radiation made on a semiconductor laser. The distance measurement accuracy is a few millimeters at a distance of 0 to 10 cm. Depending on the area and color of the reflecting surface, the distance to the measured object can reach 40 cm.

Interaction with the sensor from the host controller is performed using the I?C interface and two auxiliary configurable general purpose I/O ports. To reduce the amount of computation on the host, the VL6180X can be configured to issue interrupts only at a certain distance from the object.

The VL6180X requires 2,6...3,0V single polarity to operate. Current consumption when measuring illumination is 300 μA, when measuring distance - 1,7 mA. In standby mode, the sensor consumes less than 1 µA. Operating temperature range from -20 to +70°C. The sensor is housed in a miniature 12-pin LGA package for surface mounting with a lead pitch of 0,75 mm.

Features of VL6180X:

- wide dynamic range of illumination measurement 1...100kLux;
- high accuracy and ability to work in low light;
- fast distance measurement up to 40 cm;
- weak dependence on the reflectivity of the measured object;
- suppression of reflected interference from the protective glass of the body of the product;
- low sensitivity to third-party light sources;
- the ability to work behind a visually opaque surface of the device;
- gesture recognition when using an external microcontroller;
- a demo application for a smartphone with Android OS.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Display controller ELSA Datapath FX4 07.05.2016

ELSA is launching the Datapath FX4 display controller, starting in mid-May for around $2800. This solution is not aimed at the home PC market, so this price is justified, and this is far from the most expensive device of this class among the systems offered in this market niche.

The Datapath FX4 series of controllers, which will include two models for DisplayPort (EDC-Fx4DP) and HDMI (EDC-Fx4H), respectively, is designed to organize and control multi-display configurations and video walls composed of several display panels. One input data stream in HDMI 1.4 or DisplayPort 1.2 format, these devices are capable of dividing into four streams, which are then sent to separate panels. The maximum input resolution is 3840 x 2160 @ 60 Hz for DisplayPort and 30 Hz using HDMI, the output is 1920 x 1080 @ 60 Hz in both cases.

DisplayPort pass-through is supported, combining multiple controllers into a single system with common synchronization, control is carried out via Ethernet or USB. The package will include specialized software Datapath Wall Desiner, with which the incoming video stream can be divided between display panels as intended by the design of the video wall. All four output channels support independent cropping, mirroring, and 90, 180, and 270-degree image rotation. The device has an active cooling system.

Dimensions ELSA Datapath FX4 are 316 x 172 x 42 mm, weight - 1,86 kilograms. The devices will come with a three-year manufacturer's warranty.
