Smokers are more addicted to alcohol

30.04.2015

It is known that smokers develop alcohol dependence several times more often than non-smokers. For a while, this was just a fact of medical statistics, until finally, researchers at the Scripps Institution figured out what kind of neural mechanism might underlie such a relationship.

An article in The Journal of Neuroscience talks about a special group of neurons that are activated by the combined action of alcohol and nicotine. During the experiment, male rats were allowed to drink as much alcohol as they liked. In terms of human proportions, 1-2 servings of beer came out, and the animals stopped just when they were already clearly starting to get drunk. They did this in order to find out the starting point, that is, how much rats drink without any bad habits.

Then the animals were divided into two groups, and one of them was treated with alcohol vapors for two months in order to form their own addiction. When such rats were given alcohol, they already drank a dose corresponding to six bottles of beer, and the level of alcohol in the blood was three times the legal level (again, in terms of human proportions). The rats, like the first time, drank as much as they wanted, and there was nothing surprising in the increased needs: alcohol addiction makes everyone drink more. The second group of animals was treated not just with alcohol vapors, but in a mixture with nicotine. And now their dependence developed not in two months, like in the first group, but in just three weeks. Moreover, their addiction to alcohol did not weaken even when quinine was added to the drink. The fact that the bitter taste did not extinguish the craving for alcohol indicated a real irresistible attraction, as it looks in people.

All this was necessary to look into the brains of rats - just alcoholics and alcoholic smokers. Nicotine, as expected, activated some neurons from the reward system, which is responsible for the feeling of pleasure, reward satisfaction, etc. search further. But it turned out that in combination with alcohol, nicotine also activates stress neurons, thereby strengthening feelings of discomfort, anxiety and irritation. Stress, on the other hand, can be calmed down by the same alcohol, which, acting through the reinforcement system, “extinguishes” stress with the help of a feeling of pleasure.

The authors of the work emphasize that the neurons that turned on under the simultaneous action of nicotine and alcohol differed from those that were activated in response to each substance separately, to nicotine and alcohol.

Since such nerve cells are a separate group, they need to choose their own approach - that is, some kind of agent that would specifically suppress their activity. If such a remedy can be found, it will become easier to eliminate alcohol-nicotine addiction. In the meantime, I can advise those who are unable to part with any of the bad habits, at least indulge in them separately, at different times - if you want to quit, it will be easier for you to cope with them if your addiction alone does not "know" about another.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Connected Vehicle Technologies 28.05.2015

Qualcomm Technologies and Daimler AG have announced a strategic partnership to develop "connected car" technologies.

In the first phase, the partners plan to focus on transforming vehicles with mobile technologies such as 3G/4G connectivity, in-vehicle wireless charging, and Qualcomm Halo Wireless Electric Vehicle Charging (WEVC). In addition, the companies will jointly explore possible applications of Qualcomm Technology developments under the general name Automotive Solutions.

Qualcomm Technologies is participating in Daimler's Wireless Power Transfer 2.0 program for electric vehicles. Qualcomm's Halo WEVC technology is said to enable fast charging of electric and hybrid vehicles using a compact module that eliminates the need for a wired connection. Qualcomm WiPower technology, in turn, will allow you to charge consumer electronic devices inside the car without resorting to a wired connection.
