Self-driving Volvo cars with all-round visibility

01.03.2015

Volvo's self-driving cars, recently introduced by the company, have the means to provide precise location and a full 360° view. These are radars, cameras and laser sensors. A duplicated network of computers processes information, forming a map in real time, which displays moving and stationary objects around the car. The pinpoint location feature uses information about objects around the vehicle, as well as GPS data and a high-resolution XNUMXD digital map that is constantly updated with real-time data. The system is quite reliable and does not require driver control.

The 76 GHz continuous-wave radar and camera are mounted on the windshield - exactly the same solution used in the new Volvo XC90. This system reads road signs and monitors road bends, detects other road users and other objects on the road.

The front and rear bumpers are chosen to house four radar antennas capable of detecting objects in all directions. Radars cover 360°. The same angle, that is, a circular view is provided by four cameras, the task of which is to monitor objects in the immediate vicinity of the car. Two cameras are installed under the exterior mirror housings, the third - in the rear bumper, the fourth - in the grille. These cameras also monitor road markings. The manufacturer notes that the large dynamic range allows the cameras to quickly adjust to changing lighting, for example, when entering and exiting a tunnel.

At the front of the vehicle, under the air intake, there is a multi-beam laser scanning sensor. Its field of view is 140°, the range is 150 m. The sensor allows you to detect and recognize objects in front of the car.

A three-focus camera is installed at the top of the windshield. This is essentially three cameras in a single body: one with a wide 140° field of view, another with a 45° field of view, and a third long-range camera with a narrow 34° field of view, which is necessary for more accurate depth perception and distance estimation. objects. The camera is able to detect suddenly appeared on the road pedestrians and other dangerous objects.

The space behind the car is monitored by long-range radars. There are two of them and both of them are installed in the rear bumper. Their readings are used for vehicles approaching from behind. They are important, for example, when changing lanes.

When driving at low speeds, twelve ultrasonic sensors around the perimeter of the car come into play. They resemble the sensors of existing parking assist systems, but they use a more advanced signal processing system. Ultrasonic sensors are most relevant in situations where a pedestrian or other object suddenly appears near the car.

Using a high-resolution XNUMXD digital map, the vehicle obtains information about the environment, including elevation, road curves, lane count, tunnel geometry, guardrails, signs, ramps and more. In many cases, positioning is taken into account with an error measured in centimeters.

The operation of the vehicle location system is based on the indications of GPS, a three-axis accelerometer and a gyroscope. By comparing the images received from cameras and sensors with the image on the map, the car accurately determines its location in relation to surrounding objects. This allows you to choose the best route in real time, taking into account variables, including road bends, speed limits, sign coverage, and other factors that affect traffic flow.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Fully healthy French bulldog raised 03.04.2024

French bulldogs, with their cute faces and unique appearance, have won the hearts of many people. However, despite its popularity, this breed suffers from many health problems. Scientists and breeders are striving to change this, and recent research is opening new perspectives on the health of French bulldogs.

French bulldogs, with their unique appearance and gentle character, have become the favorites of many. However, even with its popularity, this breed suffers from many health problems associated with its unique traits.

Scientists and breeders around the world are conducting research to improve the condition of French Bulldogs and make them healthier. One promising approach is to change breed standards to make them more physically resilient.

However, scientists note that achieving this goal may require crossing French bulldogs with other dog breeds. This will cause changes in the appearance and character of the animals, which will require adaptation among lovers of this breed.

Breathing problems, skin conditions and difficulties during childbirth are just some of the problems French Bulldogs face due to their anatomy. Changing the breed's genetic code can reduce the incidence of these problems and increase the animals' lifespan.

Intensive research is currently underway to create healthier and more resilient members of the breed. Experiments with crossing French bulldogs with other dog breeds are showing encouraging results, and researchers hope this will lead to significant improvements in the health and well-being of this popular breed in the coming years.

Research into improving the health of French Bulldogs represents an important step toward creating healthier, stronger animals. This process requires the combined efforts of scientists, breeders and breed lovers, but its results promise a significant improvement in the quality of life of these beautiful dogs.
