Computer memory helps human

To better remember something new, try offloading your memory by feeding old information from your brain to the computer.

By storing information on a computer hard drive or on a "flash drive", we better remember the next piece of information - this is the conclusion reached in their work by Benjamin C. Storm and Sean M. Stone from the University of California at Santa Cruz (USA).

Twenty students participated in the experiments of psychologists, who had to study two PDF files in order to remember as much as possible of what was written in them. Each file had a list of nouns, and the first list was closed immediately after reading. At the same time, some were told to simply close it, while others were told to save it to a certain place on the computer. The second file was read for the same amount of time as the first, but after the experiment participants had to immediately say how many words from it they remembered. And only then they were checked about the first list - the one that they closed after reading and moved on to the second.

It turned out that most of the words from the second list were remembered if the first one was not just closed, but specially saved on the hard drive. That is, in a person’s memory, it seemed as if more space was freed up for a new portion of words, because he saved the previous ones on an “external medium”. The results were confirmed in another similar experiment with twice as many volunteers. However, this time there were some nuances. So, if the students were told that the saved list is not so important, that, of course, it needs to be saved, but if it suddenly becomes unavailable, then it’s okay, then in this case they memorized the second list without any advantages, as if the first list they just closed without saving.

In previous works on the interaction between computer memory and living memory, it was said that when we store information in a computer, it becomes more difficult for us to remember it ourselves. Long-term neural memory with old information becomes inaccessible - because we know that we "copied" them to the hard drive. However, as it turns out, there is also a positive side here: at the same time, we free up cognitive and psychological resources for something new.

Although psychologists have used only computer memory in experiments, it is possible that the same effect occurs if we write something down on a piece of paper. However, whether this is true or not, whether the type of "external carrier" plays any role can be clarified only after additional experiments - as well as the neural mechanism underlying the described phenomenon.

Earth's twin planet discovered 24.04.2014

An international team of astronomers working with data from the Kepler space telescope announced the discovery of the extrasolar planet Kepler-186f. Its uniqueness at the moment lies in the fact that it is the first planet similar in many respects to the Earth, which is also located in the habitable zone of its star.

At the moment, little is known about the "twin" of the Earth: the radius of the planets is 10% larger than the Earth's, but neither its composition nor mass is known yet. The native star - Kepler-186 is much colder and smaller than the Sun - by about 60%. The composition of the planetary system, in addition to 186f, includes four more celestial bodies. On their surface, water in a liquid state cannot be, since they rotate in too small orbits. The system is 500 light years away from us and is located in the constellation Cygnus. The authors of the study, based on the available information, suggest that the planet Kepler-186f has a rocky surface. Details about the life of the first earthly "twin" have yet to be clarified.

Since its launch in 2009, the Kepler space telescope has managed to make a significant contribution to the study of outer space, more specifically, to the process of searching for planets outside the solar system. To detect extrasolar planets with a telescope, a transit method is used: in the process of continuous observation of the same area of ​​\u2014b\u3500bstars, scientists record short-term periodic changes in the brightness of each star, which are caused by the passage of a planet in the foreground that obscures part of the light. As of early 246, more than XNUMX planet candidates have been discovered with the telescope, the existence of XNUMX of which has been confirmed by more detailed studies.

The search for extrasolar planets is developing at a tremendous pace: the first planet outside our system was discovered only 20 years ago, and today their number is approaching three hundred, and more than 3 thousand are waiting for confirmation. However, finding an Earth-like planet orbiting the same distance from a Sun-like star has so far failed. There is no doubt that this event will occur within 5-10 years, or even earlier. Scientists are pinning great hopes on the next generation of telescopes, in particular, on the Plato spacecraft of the European Space Agency. Its main task will be to directly search for planets similar to the Earth.
