Optical fiber with data rate up to 255 Tbps

09.11.2014

A team of scientists from the Netherlands, China and the United States presented a new development - optical fiber, which allows you to transfer data at speeds up to 255 Tbps.

The resulting material has a bandwidth that is 21 times higher than the performance of the best modern optical cables (for them it is 7-8 Tbps). The benefit of the achievement can hardly be overestimated, because, according to research results, with the development of technology, the need to increase the speed of information transfer increases exponentially.

At the same time, the transmission of significant amounts of data in an optical fiber is limited by losses, which are explained by deviations from the laws of linear optics. Such deviations occur due to the high energy of the light wave.

In conventional optical fiber, the core is a cylinder of glass or plastic that runs the entire length of the cable. Such a core is surrounded by a medium, the optical properties of which do not allow light to go beyond its limits.

According to scientists, they managed to use not one core, but as many as seven. In addition, two additional dimensions were introduced in the new fiber.

In addition, scientists have applied a technology that allows you to use several frequency channels in one fiber. In this case, each of the channels carries separate information. It is reported that the diameter of the fiber did not change much as a result.

Scientists compare their improvement with a multi-lane road, in contrast to a single-lane road (optical fiber with one core). As for the two additional dimensions, we can illustrate them with a situation where three cars run into each other while in the same lane.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Auds radio gun against intruder drones 23.10.2015

British companies Blighter Surveillance Systems, Chess Dynamics and Enterprise Control Systems have introduced a new Auds (Anti-UAV Defense System), which is designed to deal with drones that violate the law or pose some kind of threat.

The Auds radar system scans the surrounding area for illegally used drones. After establishing visual contact, the Auds system uses a powerful radio signal, with which the connection between the operator and the drone is interrupted. Moreover, the one who is at the Auds control panel has the ability to stop the drone in the air for a short period of time. Or you can make the drone not move until the battery runs out, after which it will just fall to the ground.

The Auds system not only successfully passed a series of tests funded by the UK government, but also entered the commercial production stage.

The demand for such systems will grow as news that drones are increasingly appearing near civilian airports, as well as the facts that today unmanned aerial vehicles are actively used by intruders and terrorists, will increase.
