Fog windshield

04.09.2014

Scientists at the Caledonian University of Glasgow (UK) have developed a special projection screen (Head-Up Display, HUD) to help drivers navigate the road in low visibility conditions. So far, the technology is being tested on a computer simulator, but the developers are confident that it will appear on the mass market in the future.

The system is based on augmented reality technology. With its help, the location of other vehicles is highlighted on the windshield of the car, which, due to fog or other difficult weather conditions, are not visible to the person driving. With the help of cameras and sensors, the electronics "sees" the cars ahead within a radius of up to 400 meters.

An interactive head-up display displays road markings and the proximity of other vehicles, and prompts the driver when it is safe to maneuver. This reduces the risk of a collision in bad weather by 70%, according to British researchers.

“In order to avoid an accident, it is important to always clearly see all objects on the road while driving, even if there are visual restrictions such as fog. The HUD screen can remove them, as it displays information directly in the driver’s field of view, allowing him to remain focused on the road," said Professor Vassilis Charissi, who leads the development team for the innovative HUD solution.

The work of the created HUD-system was tested on a 3D simulator, where sections of some major highways of Foggy Albion were recreated with high accuracy. More than 150 people passed virtual tests. At this stage, the experimental development demonstrates the high efficiency of safe driving, but the technology has yet to be tested on real cars.

Employees at the Caledonian University of Glasgow are convinced that their project will appear on the mass market and will find application in emergency vehicles and ordinary consumer cars.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Rugged smartphone Blackview BV8900 with a thermal imager 10.06.2023

Blackview has unveiled the BV8900 rugged smartphone, featuring a giant battery, a thermal imaging camera and more.

The novelty is based on the MediaTek Helio P90 SoC, which cannot be called new or productive. But the smartphone has 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of flash memory with a microSD slot. Interestingly, the company in a press release in many places lists the amount of RAM as 16 GB, and only then explains that 8 GB of them are virtual expansion. It looks like it's becoming a new trend.

An unexpected feature of the smartphone, given its platform, is the screen. It has a diagonal of 6,5 inches and a resolution of 2,4K. There is no exact value, but this is unusual for this class of smartphones. True, there is one but. On the Aliexpress manufacturer's page, the resolution is listed as 2400x1080 pixels, so perhaps 2,4K is such an original way to specify vertical resolution, which is hardly a good idea.

However, there are no questions about the battery capacity. It's a hefty 10 mAh, and there's a 380-watt charger here. The main camera has a resolution of 33 megapixels and relies on a Samsung ISOCELL GW64 sensor. Plus, this camera has optical stabilization. There is also a thermal imaging camera, and even with a four-fold approximation.
