Video recording of objects will help to eavesdrop on the conversation

15.08.2014

Scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have developed a method of eavesdropping on conversations by filming objects located in the vicinity of talking people on video cameras and analyzing the vibration of these objects.

The method works in several stages. First, the frequency and pressure of the sound waves that reach an object (such as a paper cup) are recorded. The camcorder then records the object's vibrations, converting them into pixel movements. After that, a special program converts pixel shifts into sounds.

"We were able to decipher the words of the song at a distance of 4,5 meters from the vibrations of a bag of chips behind a special soundproof glass," says Abe Davis, lead researcher. Then we managed to recognize the song of the group Queen Under Pressure, playing in the headphones, by the vibrations of their cord. Moreover, it was even possible to recreate the original sounds from the video recording of the candy box, which was next to the humming person. The new technology also makes it possible to determine the gender of the speaker. However, it does not yet allow to parse ordinary speech.

The authors of the article rightly note that intelligence already uses laser microphones for listening by reading information from vibrating surfaces. But for successful work, they need to eavesdrop on conversations behind glass, and transparent and clean. Thanks to the new method, it is possible to "remove" vibrations from almost any object.

As Davis notes, measuring the physical properties of distant objects using new technology is more interesting for him than intelligence activities.

"The response of objects to sound speaks to their unexpected structural properties," the scientist points out.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Portable projector for PlayStation 4 for playing without a TV 11.08.2015

Sony has introduced a portable projector for the PlayStation 4, which will allow gamers to do without a monitor or TV. However, given the brightness of the light flux, the device seems controversial.

The new Sony MPCL1 mobile projector for the PlayStation 4 console will allow you to plunge into virtual worlds without connecting to a TV. The device uses laser projection technology, and the resolution of the output image is 1920x720 pixels. You can transfer the video signal to the device either via an HDMI cable or wirelessly. At the same time, the maximum image size diagonally is 120 inches from a distance of 3,6 meters.

Thanks to a capacious battery (3000 mAh), the MPCL1 projector works up to two hours offline, and its small size allows you to take it with you for company movie screenings, or use it at work for presentations. True, there is a stumbling block. The brightness of the luminous flux is only 32 lumens, while in competitors' models it reaches higher values.
