Bus stops with solar panels and air conditioning

16.06.2014

In the capital of the UAE, Dubai, an experiment is being conducted on the use of renewable energy sources for air conditioning and lighting of bus stops.

The pilot project was launched by the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). Tests are being carried out at two air-conditioned bus stops, the equipment of which operates autonomously, independently of the city's electrical network.

The innovative solar-powered bus stops are equipped with automatic, sensor-controlled doors. Air conditioners that cool the air inside the stops during the hot months can supply warm air during the winter, heating the stop and protecting people from the weather.

Tests will be carried out before the end of this year. If the result is positive, the city will eventually install solar panels on all old-style bus stops.

The installation of air-conditioned bus stops started in the capital of the Emirates back in 2008. Currently, 898 air-conditioned bus stops have been installed in Dubai, but 130 of them are not air-conditioned due to the difficulty of supplying power to them. As a result, closed aluminum structures with sliding doors turn into real "ovens" in the summer heat, and passengers wait for the bus in the open, hiding in their shadows.

If the testing of innovative stops in the summer heat is successful, 100 old-style stops will be the first candidates for installing solar panels, after which all 1500 stops will be gradually disconnected from the city's electricity network.

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Major risk factor for gambling addiction 07.05.2024

Computer games are becoming an increasingly popular form of entertainment among teenagers, but the associated risk of gaming addiction remains a significant problem. American scientists conducted a study to determine the main factors contributing to this addiction and offer recommendations for its prevention. Over the course of six years, 385 teenagers were followed to find out what factors may predispose them to gambling addiction. The results showed that 90% of study participants were not at risk of addiction, while 10% became gambling addicts. It turned out that the key factor in the onset of gambling addiction is a low level of prosocial behavior. Teenagers with a low level of prosocial behavior do not show interest in the help and support of others, which can lead to a loss of contact with the real world and a deepening dependence on virtual reality offered by computer games. Based on these results, scientists ... >>

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Huawei 40W 12000mAh Power Bank 04.04.2019

Huawei has introduced a 40-watt portable battery that may be of interest to potential buyers of the older model with support for 40 W wired charging (proprietary SuperCharge 2.0 technology).

The battery capacity of Huawei 12000 40W SuperCharge Power Bank, as the name implies, is 12000 mAh. In this case, lithium-cobalt cells are used - the same ones provide power to the Huawei P30 Pro smartphone.

Despite a fairly capacious battery, the power bank weighs relatively little - 227 g. In addition to the USB-C connector, which supports fast charging in both directions at a power of 40 W, the Huawei 12000 40W SuperCharge Power Bank also has a full-sized USB connector. The button on the case allows you to check the charge level, which is displayed by the LEDs.

According to the manufacturer, the Huawei 12000 40W SuperCharge Power Bank will allow you to charge the battery of the Huawei P30 Pro smartphone with a capacity of 4200 mAh from 0 to 70% in just 30 minutes, while with a conventional 10-watt charge, only 26% of the charge can be replenished in the same time. Thanks to the 40W charging power in both directions, the battery itself can be fully charged from the mains in 2 hours and 14 minutes. For comparison, when charging with a current of 10 W, it would take 5 hours and 25 minutes.

External battery Huawei 12000 40W SuperCharge Power Bank will be available in blue and white colors. The start date of sales has not yet been announced. As for the price, it is rather big - 100 euros. By comparison, earlier this year, Xiaomi released a 3mAh PowerBank 20 model with 000W dual-sided fast charging for just $45.
