New small craft tracking technology

09.06.2014

The creator of the ship positioning system (AIS), exactEarth, announced the creation, together with the equipment manufacturer SRT Marine Technology (SRT), of a new ABSEA position monitoring system for small vessels and the launch of the exactAIS Trax service. In many ways, a revolutionary new product will help solve the problem of tracking millions of small vessels in the vast oceans.

Graham Stickler, vice president of exactEarth, said, “A huge number of small boats are now spending most of their time out of sight of shore services. With the help of the new ABSEA AIS devices and the exactAIS Trax service, it is possible to achieve high accuracy in determining the position of vessels. We believe that the new vessel traffic management system will provide a higher level of safety for all participants in maritime traffic."

The new system is based on ABSEA technology, which for the first time uses low-power transceivers for satellite monitoring. Small AIS transmitters do not require large power supplies, wired connections or any other vessel modifications.

The transceiver is battery powered and can work with existing AIS satellite constellation. An innovation is the exactAIS Trax service, which provides the possibility of global monitoring of any ships, regardless of their displacement and distance from AIS shore receivers.

In addition to ensuring maritime safety, the new exactEarth system will provide an unprecedented map of the global maritime transport system, updated in real time. In addition, the new generation of AIS can store a history of each ship's movements, making it easier to analyze the data it collects. This information can be useful for analytical geographic information systems used for scientific research, logistics, crime control or military affairs.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Wind farms could work on Mars 27.12.2022

NASA scientists have found that there may be enough wind on Mars to use wind turbines as energy sources.

In order to simulate conditions on the Red Planet, the researchers adapted a climate model originally developed to study the climate on Earth. Factors such as the amount of solar radiation, dust content in the atmosphere and geographical relief were taken into account, which made it possible to determine the wind speed in different parts of the planet's surface.

It turned out that in many regions of Mars strong enough winds blow to contribute to the generation of wind energy, and in some regions the wind strength is sufficient to be the only source of energy. These include crater rims and volcanic highlands, as well as places with ice formations where wind can generate more electricity than solar panels.

As the authors write, wind energy compensates for the daily and seasonal decline in solar energy, especially in regions of scientific interest, in mid-latitudes and during local dust storms. The turbines will stabilize solar power generation, thereby increasing the percentage of time power exceeds mission design requirements to 60 to 90 percent of a large portion of the Martian surface.
