Music of antimatter

30.08.2013

Specialists from the CERN laboratory and the Large Hadron Collider were able to turn antimatter vibrations into sound, so now everyone can listen to what kind of music antimatter plays.

"Music" played not quite ordinary particles. For every elementary particle, there is a corresponding antiparticle. Matter particles have the same mass as their "anti-twins", but they have the opposite electric charge. Most particles exist as either matter or antimatter, but some particles can "switch" between the two states. In their recent experiments, scientists have observed the transformation of just such particles, called B0 and B0S, from ordinary matter to antimatter and vice versa.

B0 and B0S oscillate between their existence as matter and antimatter at up to 3 million times per second. It was the moment of transition from matter to antimatter and vice versa that scientists managed to turn into sound and record a short audio track, reminiscent of the background noise of space.

There was no point in directly converting the moment of transition into sound, since the result was too high a note that a person was not able to hear. Therefore, scientists had to reduce the frequency of sound vibrations millions of times, and now we can hear what the particle "experiences" at the moment of transformation into antimatter and the reverse transformation into matter.

The video shows a graph of the transition process, accompanied by the corresponding sound. At first, only white noise is heard - random background fluctuations of particles in the detector of the Large Hadron Collider. The two peaks on the graph indicate B0 and B0S particles. The first peak is a loud B0-B0 oscillation tone, then background noise is heard, and then a B0S-B0S oscillation tone. The B0S-B0S oscillation frequency is very high, so the transition of this particle is more difficult to observe - this explains why the sound at the second peak of the graph is much quieter.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

clockwork laptop 05.03.2006

At the UN Conference on the Information Society in Tunisia, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology presented a cheap laptop that they hope will be widely used in third world countries.

The computer, protected from the vicissitudes of the climate of hot countries, is powered by a built-in generator, which must be rotated by a crank. A minute of rotation is 40 minutes of laptop operation.

Although the technical data of the computer is modest - the operating frequency of the processor is 500 megahertz, the hard drive is replaced by a memory chip with a capacity of one gigabyte, the display diagonal is only 7 inches - a cheap laptop allows you to access the Internet and do programming. Free public programs are put on it.

The creators hope that the car will be sold in developing countries for only a hundred dollars, possibly with an installment plan of five years, to be affordable even for poor families. Brazil and Thailand have already expressed their desire to purchase such computers for a million dollars.
