Key Optical Transistor Technology

19.07.2013

Scientists and engineers from the Technical University of Vienna were able to control the polarization of a terahertz light beam, which is the basis for creating promising optical microcircuits.

Scientists have managed to change the polarization of a light beam (the direction of light oscillations) using a special material and an electric current. This laboratory technique has the potential to be scaled up and applied to industrial production, paving the way for the mass production of high-speed electronics that are controlled by light rather than electric current. In addition, the control of terahertz radiation can be useful not only for the production of optical computers, but also, for example, for the manufacture of scanners and medical devices.

Light can oscillate in different directions, that is, have different polarizations. This phenomenon has long been known and widely used, for example, in 3D television. Scientists from Austria for the first time managed to control the polarization of light at the micro level. An electric field applied to an ultrathin layer of telluride, mercury, allows you to arbitrarily change the polarization of light. In this case, terahertz light radiation was used, that is, the optical chip can operate at a much higher frequency than current processors with their 3-5 GHz.

One of the advantages of the Austrian invention is the very low power consumption. To change the polarization of terahertz light radiation using an electric field, a voltage of less than 1 V is required.

Thus, scientists and engineers from the Technical University of Vienna have created a technology that could revolutionize the electronics industry. Of course, modern production technologies and the principles of electronics are very firmly rooted, but let's hope that the advantages of optical transistors will eventually outweigh all the costs of reforming production.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

CC1310F128 transceiver with 16 uA consumption 19.04.2016

When designing devices for the Internet of Things, consumption in the receive mode is the main factor affecting battery life. The CC1310F128 transceiver is the best in its class and requires only 5,5 mA when operating in continuous receive mode. However, this current does not allow operation on AA batteries for more than one to two weeks.

To reduce the current consumption in the CC1310 radio core, a special command CMD_PROP_RX_SNIFF ("sniff") is provided, which puts the receiver into a special mode (Wake-on-Radio) with periodic activation of the receiving part, which can significantly reduce the average current consumption - up to 16 μA and below.

The principle of operation of the Wake-on-Radio mode (wake-on-radio) is quite simple - the receiver is not turned on all the time, but periodically starts for a short time to check the presence of the expected signal. If a signal is detected, the packet is received; if not, the receiving part is turned off to save energy. Signal availability is assessed by two adjustable parameters - carrier level (RSSI) and preamble quality (PQT). Of course, this mode also has a negative side - the transmitted packet must have a long preamble so that the receiver does not miss useful data during sleep.

Separate examples for the receiver (rfWakeOnRadioRx) and the transmitter (rfWakeOnRadioTx) make it possible to implement a radio channel with a message transmission latency of 500 ms. This delay allows you to reduce the current consumption of the receiver to 16 μA (more than 10 years of operation).

At shorter delays, the average current consumption increases, at longer delays, the current consumption can be even lower. If the delay time is reduced to 100 ms, which can be considered an acceptable value for visual control, the current consumption of the receiver will not exceed 100 μA. This current consumption allows you to work more than two years on AA batteries (2000 mAh).
