General Atomics Aeronautical Systems specialists have developed a technology that allows you to shoot high-definition video using a synthetic aperture radar. This is a significant achievement that dramatically expands the capabilities of military equipment. Such radars can revolutionize military affairs, as thermal imagers did in their time.

The unique technology, called VideoSAR, has already been tested on the popular Lynx Block 20A radar weighing about 50 kg. This radar is mainly used on reconnaissance aircraft, such as the U-21, and on the MQ-9 Reaper strike UAV. The VideoSAR system based on the Lynx Block 20A provided continuous 1080p video transmission. Prototype testing took place from a King Air 200 aircraft and took place on March 25, 2013 in Ramon, California. During testing, VideoSAR was able to film a wide range of stationary and moving vehicles in high resolution, a milestone in the development of radar. Moreover, VideoSAR has a mode of automatic detection of moving targets, and the radar reliably captures even those objects that are moving at low speed. At the same time, a radar video review of the surrounding area is preserved.

Perhaps the layman cannot fully appreciate the importance of this achievement. Until recently, the radar could display information about a radio-contrast target only as a dot on the screen, only relatively recently have radars appeared that allow you to take high-resolution photographs. Now, finally, there is also a compact HD video radar.

The advantage of VideoSAR is that it gives a clear image of the target in any weather and at any time of the day. He is not afraid of exposure to the sun, sees through clouds, snow, rain, smoke screens, easily detects radio-contrast targets (a car against the background of the earth). In addition, technologies have been developed that allow high-precision 3D radar surveys, as well as the search for camouflaged objects, including equipment and accumulations of manpower hidden under the foliage of trees.

But the main thing: the radar works at a much greater distance than a thermal imager or a conventional visible range camera. This will allow using VideoSAR to detect, identify and track a target at a long distance, which will complicate the work of air defense systems. For example, the range of action of the Lynx Block 20A, which is far from the most advanced and powerful today, is 80 km - this is 4-10 times the radius of destruction of short-range air defense systems, which are most common on the battlefield.

Scientists at the Institute for the Development of Basic Sciences in South Korea have developed a patch for diabetics that monitors blood glucose levels and self-administers a sugar-lowering drug when needed.

An unusual device is a polymer patch with sensors for sweat, glucose, acidity and tremor, which make it possible to judge an increase or decrease in the content of glucose in the blood serum compared to the norm. The patch also contains microscopic needles filled with metformin, a sugar-lowering drug used to treat diabetes.

After being applied to the skin, the device collects the required amount of sweat within a few minutes and analyzes its biochemical parameters. If abnormalities are detected, the patient is given an injection of metformin. The sensors are made of graphene with small inclusions of gold to improve the electrochemical properties. The sensors have high conductivity, sufficient reliability and optical transparency.

The patch is connected to a smartphone wirelessly so that the program calculates the required dose of medicine based on the readings of the sensors.
