Realistic flight simulator

Boeing has signed a three-year, $6,3 million contract with the US Air Force Research Laboratory to further develop the advanced ILVC flight simulator. Under this contract, the system will include F-15E and F / A-18E fighters, and at the end of 2013 there will be a demonstration of ILVC at Nellis Air Force Base.

ILVC is a descendant of the 2007 Boeing Alpine internal research project. In that project, the F-15E was used as a test platform. The current project is an expanded version of the Alpine system and has special characteristics, combining real aircraft and virtual models during the exercises. This allows you to download threat simulations and simulate the combat environment on the displays of a real aircraft. The reliability of the simulation is such that pilots cannot distinguish it from reality. Data is uploaded to the ILVC system using a standard Link 16 communication system on an IP network developed by Boeing for another project.

ILVC has already used virtual models in recent trials. Two F-15E and F / A-18E fighters, armed with virtual air-to-air and air-to-ground weapons, in cooperation with the virtual AWACS aircraft, met in a training battle with two real F-16 fighters, a virtual Su-27 and several fighters imitating the Su-27. Several air defense systems simulating various anti-aircraft systems of a mock enemy, as well as ground moving targets, also participated in the exercise. The pilots did not find any differences between real and simulated targets: on tactical displays, they looked and acted the same.

The ILVC project should help overcome the distrust of virtual simulation and the mixing of real and virtual equipment in exercises. The prospects of this technology are huge, since it allows you to play any combat scenarios involving any number of vehicles. There are a number of problems with the introduction of the new system, in particular, it is necessary to prepare new training procedures. There is also the problem of integrating ILVC and the on-board electronics of 5th generation aircraft, which are equipped with secure systems and have a limited number of outgoing communication channels.

It should be noted that a similar system is being developed by Lockheed Martin. Their system, called ACES, has already been tested on F-16, F-22 and F-35 aircraft, and will be officially demonstrated to the US military for the first time this spring.
