Military electronics with DNA marking

30.12.2012

The Defense Logistics Agency of the Pentagon (DLA) has issued a mandatory DNA labeling requirement for certain electronic components. First of all, this concerns military electronics for expensive and strategically important equipment, for example, relay satellites, control systems on ships, aircraft, missiles, etc. The DLA document indicates that DNA marking should be used by companies that want to bid on certain military contracts.

In the US, the problem of counterfeit electronics is very acute. Several investigations over the past and current years have unearthed a large amount of counterfeit electronics in US high-tech equipment, which were sold under the guise of branded certified products. Sometimes these were just old unreliable microcircuits with replaced markings, and in some cases new chips of unknown origin, in which "bookmarks" could be placed that disable military equipment.

To solve this problem, the US military plans to use DNA marking. This technology involves stitching specific pieces of plant DNA in a specific order using a specific process. If you don't have the right key and the technology, you won't be able to copy the DNA markings and sell counterfeit electronics. Thus, many underground semi-handicraft workshops for "laundering" microcircuits will no longer be able to produce counterfeit military products.

Despite the importance of this DLA decision, some special purpose electronics manufacturers point out the problems of DNA labeling. For example, Lansdale Semiconductor President Dale Lillard, JEDEC JC-13.2 Chairman Lee Mathiesen, and Rochester Electronics Director of Engineering Dan Days note that top-down DNA labeling remains a "dark horse" for them. There are also doubts that DNA marking will be effective in the fight against counterfeiting - the US government has not yet provided any information about the reliability of this technique. In particular, it is not entirely clear how to deal with the production of counterfeit products from old decommissioned microcircuits - after all, they will retain the "legitimate" DNA marking.

Another concern is related to the effectiveness of DNA labeling. The fact is that it only indicates who added the DNA tag, but does not give any guarantees on the characteristics of the product or its proper storage.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Boots with spring studs 27.06.2003

Generics Group engineers have created a fundamentally new boots - with spring spikes. In them, plastic spikes are attached to a compressed steel springy plate.

Any force acting on the cleat causes the spring plate to collapse, absorbing the energy and reducing the pressure on the foot at that point. At the same time, the ends of this plate are bent down, bringing the secondary spikes into contact with the ground. This gives extra grip and distributes the load. The whole mechanism is enclosed in a durable plastic that prevents the accumulation of dirt inside.

Since spring boots significantly reduce the risk of injury to athletes compared to conventional sports shoes, the creators of the novelty are confident that their offspring will be in great demand.
