Honda hearing robot

05.12.2012

Engineers at the Honda Research Institute rightly reasoned that a modern robot's keen hearing is as necessary as cameras, that is, vision. Deciding to focus on this aspect, the authors of the project built the HEARBO robot, which has a delicate hearing, it perceives sound from four sources at the same time and can point to each of them.

He received this skill thanks to the HARK system. Eight microphones are built into the head of the HEARBO (HEARing robot, which can be translated as "hearing robot"), the data from them is carefully processed. The system filters the sound coming from the 17 HEARBO motors, a step the developers call "self-noise suppression". Then the remaining components of the sound stream are analyzed, the direction to each of the sources is calculated, while the declared accuracy of the calculations is only one degree.

The ability to calculate the source of the sound will help the robot communicate with several people at the same time, which was confirmed in tests. Simulating work in a catering establishment, the robot took four orders from people who spoke at the same time. Similarly, the machine played "rock, paper, scissors", three players simultaneously called their move, and HEARBO determined the winner. In the future, he will be able to make out the speech of one person who addresses him in a noisy crowd. For the robot of the future, this is important.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

New NXP Semiconductors Chips for Miniature Power Supplies 26.03.2014

New chips from NXP Semiconductors make it possible to create power supplies up to 45 W built into the power plug.

In recent years, in addition to traditional external power supplies (PSUs), other interesting options have been proposed for powering laptops. These include, for example, Power over Ethernet, wireless power, USB power (up to 100W), or external PCIe cables. At the same time, no matter how interesting new approaches appear, it will hardly be possible to abandon a conventional power supply even in the long term. But even with such a "conservative" approach, innovative solutions appear.

For example, NXP Semiconductors recently announced a set of voltage converters that can be used to create miniature, lightweight and efficient power supplies for laptops with a power consumption of no more than 45 watts. These are TEA1892 and TEA1836 microcircuits created within the GreenChip platform.

According to the developer, on the basis of a pair of these microcircuits, it is possible to produce power supplies half the size of an ordinary chocolate bar. Due to this compactness, it becomes possible to integrate power supplies directly into plug-in connectors for connection to the AC mains. This will greatly simplify the design and make it more convenient to use external power supplies for laptops.

Most importantly, a high degree of integration does not mean that the PSU components will be subject to overheating when operating at maximum power. The efficiency of the converters is over 93%, and the maximum case temperature should not exceed 55°C. The new chip pair also features extremely low standby power, with idle power consumption below 30mW.
