Copolymers will increase HDD capacity by 5 times

The capacity of a computer hard drive can be increased five times thanks to processes developed by chemists and engineers at the University of Texas at Austin. To do this, the researchers use a technique that relies on the self-organization of substances known as block copolymers. The results are described in a Science article. It also focuses on real world tests in collaboration with HGST, one of the leading innovators in the disc world.

"The world has seen a steady, exponential growth in the amount of information that can be stored in the memory of an electronic device over the past few decades, but the limit has already been reached and we are running into physical limits," said S. Grant Wilson, professor of chemistry and biochemistry at the College of Engineering. and natural sciences. "The entire global industry is currently struggling to get past the one terabit per square inch limit," Wilson said. - If we simply move the points even closer together using the existing method, they will spontaneously switch from time to time, and the storage properties of hard drives will be lost. Then trouble will happen. Can you imagine that one day your bank account will just spontaneously change?"

With modern manufacturing methods, zeros and ones are written as magnetic dots on a continuous metal surface. The closer the points are to each other, the more information can be stored there. But there is a limit to saturation. The points have become so close that any further increase in their number in close proximity to each other will cause them to begin to affect the magnetic fields of their neighbors and make them unstable. However, there is one important factor: if the points are reliably isolated from each other, they can be moved much closer to each other without any destabilization.

A group of professors Wilson and Ellison succeeded in developing special self-assembled copolymers that cover hard disk platters. As a result, a bizarre pattern of the thinnest copolymer tracks is obtained on its surface, which shields the magnetic points from each other. In this case, the density of points increases fivefold. The team has made great progress on a number of fronts. With the right temperature and the right conditions, researchers have been able to synthesize block copolymers with the right parameters, which independently form insulating elements from the smallest points in the world. And amazingly, this happens in just 30 seconds, which is also a record.
