Smart carpet will report danger

Engineers at the University of Manchester have created a smart rug that can alert homeowners to fires, toxic spills, burglars and even family members falling to the floor.

To do this, plastic optical fibers were woven into the carpet, which can monitor the room in real time. The carpet uses visualization technology that analyzes a two-dimensional image of a light pattern on the surface of a "smart" carpet. In the future, a wide variety of sensors can be integrated into the carpet, including chemical detectors and temperature sensors.

The carpet is able to analyze both a slow change of state, such as crawling, and unexpected incidents, such as the fall of large objects and people. Thus, a familiar element of the household environment turns into a control center for the situation inside the home and can promptly notify about dangerous incidents.

The developers place special hope on the medical use of their carpet. So, 30-40% of older people fall to the floor every year due to disorders in the musculoskeletal system and nervous system. Despite the seeming insignificance of these incidents, they account for 50% of hospitalizations due to injuries sustained at home by people over the age of 65.

The "smart" carpet will not only allow detecting the fact of the fall of a lonely pensioner, but will also follow the person's gait. Perhaps this will help in time to detect imperceptible processes of movement disorders, which in the future threaten with serious problems.
