Old heart rejuvenated with stem cells

Scientists at the University of San Diego's Heart Institute have succeeded in rejuvenating old heart cells using modified stem cells. During the experiment, for the first time in the history of medical science, it was possible to renew old heart cells damaged by heart failure. This opens up completely new possibilities in the fight against cardiovascular diseases, which lead the list of the most common causes of death in people.

Scientists have created modified stem cells with increased activity of the enzyme telomerase, which lengthens the length of telomeres. Telomeres are a kind of "protective caps" at the ends of chromosomes and contribute to cellular replication. The process of cell aging is inevitably accompanied by a reduction in the length of telomeres.

The researchers modified human stem cells with the PIM-1 kinase enzyme and placed them on heart cells taken from elderly people. As a result, it was found that the process of cell aging literally reversed: active repair of the myocardial muscle was observed. In mice, PIM-1 kinase-modified stem cells lengthened heart cell telomeres and caused the growth of new heart tissue in just four weeks.

A new technology to restore the heart has the potential to replace heart transplants in many cases and restore health to people who have had severe heart attacks. Currently, scientists are working on improving the method of telomere lengthening and testing its safety.
