Intel will teach TVs to recognize people

Intel expects to know the gender and age of viewers and display relevant advertising on the TV screen. Television networks have responded to this idea without enthusiasm, as the corporation intends to seek royalties for the use of new technology.

Intel is in talks with TV networks to bring facial recognition technology to set-top boxes that can recognize the gender and age of the viewer and display relevant ads on the TV screen, Reuters reported. According to Intel representatives, their technology offers more accurate analysis compared to existing analytical tools, such as those offered by the American company Nielsen. This technology will not record personal information associated with a specific user.

The company is currently negotiating with several operators, but no agreements have yet been reached with any of them. Negotiations have been going on for the past few months and are being conducted with at least several content providers. Intel proposes to constantly deduct a certain percentage for the use of this technology, which content providers are not satisfied with, especially since the technology is new and untested. Meanwhile, Intel emphasizes that more precise targeting will generate financial benefits that will ultimately offset technology costs. Despite the challenges, Intel plans to bring the new technology to the commercial market in late 2012.

Intel Corporation manufactures Atom CE processors for set-top boxes and is Google's partner in the Google TV project. The company takes an active part in the formation of "smart television" and has repeatedly demonstrated options for the development of this direction. Analysts said the launch of facial recognition technology is a new way Intel is trying to strengthen its position in the TV market, especially since the Google TV project has not been a success.

Late last year, Google CEO Eric Schmidt said that by the summer of 2012, most TVs on sale will be based on the Google TV platform. However, vendors are in no hurry to release the corresponding devices, and Logitech, for example, abandoned this direction after the failed sales of the Revue set-top box based on Google TV. The failure of Revue is due to the inconvenience of the platform's interface. In fact, using the device was more difficult than if the user picked up a regular laptop and watched TV channels on it. It is expected that competition in the TV market will intensify after Apple introduces its own TV.

Researchers from the University of Tokyo and Tokyo Agricultural University showed mice different objects to remember them, and then, after some time, observed how well the mice remembered them. If the mouse studied the subject for a short time, it means that it remembered it quite well, and if it took a long time, it means that it managed to forget it. The objects were shown to mice just before when the animals usually wake up (that is, in the evening, because mice are nocturnal animals), and their memory was checked either a day later, that is, again before natural awakening, or immediately after the mice usually went to sleep (that is, eat very early in the morning). In the first case, when a day passed between acquaintance with a new thing and remembering, the mice did not remember it well; in the second case, when the thing was shown to them after they were supposed to fall asleep (but they showed it, of course, to awake mice), they remembered it well. The same results were obtained when it was necessary to get acquainted not with an inanimate object, but with another mouse.

But the experiment was set up not only with ordinary mice, but also with mutant mice in which the BMAL1 gene did not work. This is one of the main genes that control circadian rhythms: the level of the BMAL1 protein changes during the day, and as it changes, it turns on or off many other genes. In general, mice with BMAL1 turned off forgot and remembered in exactly the same way, only they forgot more strongly - when a familiar object or mouse was shown to them a day later, they clearly remembered them worse than normal animals with working BMAL1. That is, firstly, memory clearly depended on the time of day, which neuroscientists have suspected for a long time, and, secondly, memory processes depended on an influential clock gene.

The clock protein BMAL1 stimulated the work of dopamine receptors and modified a number of signaling molecules in one of the zones of the hippocampus, which, as we know, is one of the main brain memory centers. Perhaps, using the signaling pathways that are affected by the BMAL1 gene, it will be possible to create some kind of memory enhancer. Although why memory is subject to circadian rhythms at all remains a mystery - it is possible that this is simply a side effect of the circadian rhythms.
