The US Army wants to work with tablets with gloves

The US Army is actively armed with smartphones and mobile devices on the Android platform. However, the use of these useful devices has faced another serious obstacle: it is almost impossible to use the touch screen with a gloved hand.

A new Pentagon request involves the development of a "capacitive touch screen compatible with combat gloves." The new screen should provide high accuracy of pressure positioning, even if the soldier or the pilot of the aircraft is wearing durable fire-resistant gloves. The technical complexity of such a screen is aggravated by the fact that the smartphone or tablet must be in a protective case. If such a touch screen can be created, it will certainly be able to gain popularity in the commercial market.

Currently, the US Army is actively working on the issue of equipping troops with simple and cheap devices based on the Android operating system. Periodically, one-off smartphone purchases are made, new military applications are developed, but it is not yet clear when every soldier will use Android smartphones as a standard piece of equipment. Problems even in such nuances as the use of touch screens in gloves, which in combat conditions is difficult to constantly take off and put on. Also, a certain conservatism is still strong in the military environment, which involves equipping the troops with standardized, carefully tested and purchased equipment at preferential wholesale prices.

Currently, American soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan use a wide variety of personal smartphones and tablets, and it is not yet clear how to bring this set of undoubtedly useful devices into a certain order.
