Playing Tetris will get rid of painful memories

11.05.2012

For a long time, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was only a problem for survivors of violence, car accidents, natural disasters, trauma, and so on. However, during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, there were so many patients with PTSD (at least 25% of returned soldiers) that the Pentagon had to pay attention to this and allocate a lot of money to solve this problem.

Unfortunately, behavioral changes caused by severe stress have proven difficult to treat. It is especially difficult to find a simple and effective therapy immediately after a psychological trauma. However, the study, conducted by Oxford researchers, offers a completely new approach to treating the symptoms of post-traumatic stress.

It turns out that the old Tetris game can help. Scientists have found that playing Tetris in a specific way loads the brain and prevents it from fixing traumatic memories. Thus, if you immediately sit down to play Tetris after a hard experience or a terrible incident, then the game will prevent the recent experience from turning into vivid lasting memories.

During the experiment, psychologists invited 60 volunteers to watch videos with scenes of injury or death. After 30 minutes of watching, the group was divided into three parts: the first sat down to play Tetris, the second took part in a small 10-minute quiz, and the third just sat and did nothing. The participants were then allowed to go home and asked to record all their memories of the scary video for a week.

As a result, it turned out that people who played Tetris had an average of 2 memories of a scary video, while others had 4-5.

Of course, weeks of monitoring and video cannot be compared to a full recovery after a horrific experience of combat or other events directly related to the death and injury of people. However, the results of 'Tetris-therapy' are encouraging, and scientists are going to continue research in the field - directly in the field of combat operations. Apparently, the experiments will be carried out with soldiers who have just returned from a serious alteration.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

IGBT modules with a total lead inductance of 15 nH 30.11.2009

SEMIKRON has introduced the latest generation of low inductance 1200 V SEMITRANS IGBT modules designed for use in 20...300 kW converters. Now these modules will be equipped with V-IGBT (Fuji) chips, similar in their characteristics to Trench 4 crystals.

The new IGBTs feature smoother switching characteristics and lower dynamic losses to improve conversion efficiency. V-IGBT crystals will be installed in three module sizes in three different configurations, designed for use in eight power ranges. The operating current range of the power switches is 150...600 A. The total inductance of SEMITRANS 3 and 4 outputs is reduced to 15 nH.

With a typical IGBT switching speed of 5000 A/µs, the amplitude of switching surges is only 75 V. For power switches of the same class available on the market, this value is in the range of 90...125 V. The new modules will be produced in basic configurations, necessary for the design of industrial converters: single keys, half-bridges and choppers. The insulation voltage of the components of the new SEMITRANS family is 4000 V, they are equipped with 4 types of IGBT crystals: IGBT2, IGBT2 fast, IGBT3, IGBT4.

SEMITRANS modules have 3 operating voltage classes: 600 V, 1200 V and 1700 V, they are produced in 3 standard sizes of housings of 34 mm and 62 mm standards. Also available are 6 key SEMITRANS 6 according to the 3-phase inverter scheme, SEMITRANS 5 for building a 3-level inverter with an integrated current shunt. A SEMITRANS 9 with an isolation voltage of 9 kV for railway applications is under development.
